After party - What goes on after tartan registration

    Greeting!
After 2 years I have finally found a tartan design that has a story and that I am ready to wear forever.
The story of how we came to the tartan is "simple": we chose the colors according to our surname and the color codes:
    K - black, R - red, O - orange and N - gray, which are also the letters in my family's surname.
I added the first and last name, and the date of birth for my wife and me, and finally the wedding date, when we became a family.
The next step was to register the tartan, and what follows is my experience on the way to making the kilt.

Today I received a reply that the tartan was registered, and after that 3 emails followed,
the essential details of which I will share with you so you can see what to expect.
    1st mail:
Offer for tartan weaving and making items.
Highlights: Made in Scotland, fabric minimum 12 yards (£80 per yard), kilt sewing £275.
    2nd mail:
A person who collects tartans, copy of the text below:
Some people collect stamps but I collect tartans and I'd very much like to add yours to my electronic collection.
To do that however, I need to have your permission for the Scottish Register of Tartans to provide me with the thread count
    .
    3rd mail:
New offer for fabric making, this time from Pakistan.
Price: Heavy Weight :-325-gsm US$ 7.90 per yard. Catch: Minimum order 150 yards.

That's it for today, I'll be back with news.

    Hi,
I've been collecting offers for the past week, so here's an update.
I sent an inquiry to two mills that I saw forum members recommending.
The inquiry consisted of questions about tartan weaving, 13oz (medium weight)
and the second part was about making kilts and other items.
A first mill referred me to tailors and I'm still waiting for an answer about the price of the tartan.
Second mill sent a price of £180 per yard.

I also continued correspondence with the company that first approached me.
Currently, my biggest problem is that the first offer is twice as cheap as the second.
I'm afraid that when something is too good to be true, it usually isn't.

My question to you is, is it possible for a House of Edgar tartan to cost £80 per yard?
The tartan is woven double width, so the price for minimum quantity: 12 yards would be £960.

    Please your thoughts and advice.

Congratulations on getting your own personal tartan registered!

The price of a custom run of tartan can be all over the map, as you're seeing. I wouldn't know what is normal for pricing these days, so I can't answer that particular question. But HoE produces good quality tartan cloth, as far as I know.

Do you have specifics on the details of their offer? What type of selvedge do you get with double-width in 13oz cloth? What is the sett size? Will they lay out the setts to be centered on the double-width cloth so it can be ripped down the middle and joined to make kilts (I would assume so, but how will the sett lay out in relation to the selvedge)?

    Hello,
today came the third offer which calmed me down quite a bit...
What I found out is the following, the prices of tartan weaving really vary a lot,
the prices of kilt making/tailoring also.
So, at the moment prices for tartan are:
The House of Edgar - minimum 12 yards, £80 per yard - 13oz (medium weight), double width - don't have more details.
    Marton mills - minimum 13m at £68.64 /m (£64 per yard) - Bute – 420glm/13oz mediumweight wool, double width
Lochcarron of Scotland - minimum 11 m £181.00 per metre (£166 per yard) - Braeriach 13 oz special weave medium weight tartan fabric (138cms/54")
Kilt making: from £135 to £435
    Flashes: from £7,50 to £25
    Plaid: from £60 to £100
    Waistcoat: from £60 to £100
    Skirt: from £100 to £160
    Shawl (48" square) = £100

In the end we decided on HoE, 15 yards,
kilt, flashes and plaid will be sewn in Scotland, by another tailor not in HoE,
the rest of the material will be sent to us, so we will find a tailor in Croatia.

I will try to keep this thread alive, because now we have 4 months to wait until the tartan is made,
and if there are more interesting things in the process, I will definitely keep you informed, as well as about the final result. ;)

I note that it is not my intention to advertise anyone,
but I am just sharing an experience that I believe can be useful to other forum members.

    @Tobus
Thanks for the congratulations and sorry that at the moment I don't know the answer to many of the questions you asked,
but I believe that I will find out during this process, and we will all see together how it will look in the end.

The other consideration is whether you want a selvedge or a tuck edge?.

If I remember from recent inquiries, HoE doesn’t offer kilting selvedge in their double-width.

Correct, and so that would rile them out for me.
