As an American 1st, a descendant of Scottish ancestry second, I was amused by an article in today's NY Times that in ways exemplifies the United States as still young at 250 years.

It was about 2 events that will occur in NYC's athletic temple (Madison Square Garden) later this week (probably the rehearsal dinner and the actual wedding of two "All Americans," Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce). Much of it focused on what the 1,000 (or so) invited guests will be expected to wear at the wedding, including a brief lecture on white vs. black tie (I guess "we" really DID need that—although, somehow, I can't seem to find my own invitation).

But then, this IS America, the country now hosting the biggest athletic tournament in the world, so it's probably appropriate to remind us a bit about fashion etiquette, given the excesses (and deficiencies) in fabric so typical of our own biggest fashion event (the Motion Picture Academy Academy Awards) and this peripheral "football" (star) event, featuring a guy who may have gone his entire career without touching the ball with either foot.

I'll close with one of my favorite "style" jokes of all time (from the host announcer AT an Academy Awards ceremony a decade or two so ago). It will be understood only by people familiar with American Politics and Icelandic native singers.

The ceremony begins with the host (almost always a comedian) making fun of people in the audience, usually movie stars. On this occasion, Jon Stewart launched one-liners at many in the audience, then announced "we're so sorry Bjork couldn't be in attendance this year; she was trying on her dress, and Dick Cheney shot her."

I have been handed this (yes rather poor...Is all that survives) pic of a Tom.
Looking at it I am opined its either a KOSB or A and SH piper, from 1918/19 with a wound stripe and his Mutt and Jeff ribands up.

Im seeing 2 plus maybe x3 tassles on a grey sporran. I note how he has his hands in just the right place to hind any further detailing!

May I have your thoughts pse?
I am aware that it is a poor pic, but sadly this this only extant copy in the family. We know he is Arthur, but that's about it!.

Lochcarron is now weaving Prince Charles Edward Stewart tartan in a similar colour-scheme seen in 18th century examples such as the Glamis cloth and the West Highland Museum trews.

They're calling it "weathered" though the colour-scheme is completely different to Lochcarron's "weathered" range of tartans (which was copied entirely from the DC Dalgliesh "reproduction" colours range).

The sett, however, appears to be more like the modern PCES tartan rather than the sett seen in the examples mentioned above.

Sadly they're only weaving it in blanket stuff:

https://www.lochcarron.co.uk/bobbie-...WmhaGDqe911tqv

How might Lochcarron be talked into weaving it in kilting cloth?

My name is Dan Walsh. I am a firefighter in Texas. I had a sporran made by an ebay seller named bonsaipottery, this was back in 2013. I have since lost this sporran that I used frequently, when bagpiping, recently. I am attempting to get a new one made similar to what I had but am having a very tough time, as it had a fire emblem on it and was made using badger fur. If anyone out there knows the seller I am referencing, or has contact information for them, I would appreciate it. I scoured my emails, but the only communication I had with them was through ebay, so I only know his name is John, and he also is from Texas.

If you think you may be able to assist with me getting this sporran remade/replaced, please reach out. I would appreciate it.

I was rather surprised to see Jamie Frasier wearing a kilt in the Battle of King's mountain in the TV series, Outlander. I would have thought kilts would have disappeared by that time in the colonies. This is partly of interest to me because I am interested in being a member of the Color Guard for the Sons of the American Revolution charter in Philadelphia. I went to the trouble of having one of my ancestors acknowledged by the group. Many members wear the uniform of Washington's Lifeguards or some variation of a militia uniform, however, my antecedents were from the Carolina militias that responded to the threat of Tarleton's threat to the peace of the back country so makes sense to me to wear something that reflects that tradition. I claim kinship to the Murray's whose tartan was defined by Lord George Murray prior to the American Revolution rather than being an invention of the Victorians.
I was wondering if wearing a Murray of Atholl kilt as a reenactor of a Revolutionary War militia member makes sense.

This is of course related to a wedding outfit, but I'm running into an issue I haven't encountered in my kilting adventures yet.

We have good friends getting married in November and, with their enthusiastic endorsement, I'm attending the wedding in a kilt. It's an afternoon wedding, so it will be Argyle jacket and waistcoat with tie rather than PC. They encourage fall colors, and specifically are asking guests not to wear green as it will be part of the wedding party attire, so I have a Glen Affric kilt on order, which I think is a beautiful tartan and also perfect for fall. I plan to pair that with a dark khaki tweed jacket and waistcoat and burgundy hose.

Here's where the question comes in. I think with the overall color palate it will look very nice to have a brown sporran instead of the more common black. My ghillie brogues are of course black. In modern suiting it would be a terrible mistake to mix black shoes with a brown belt, but does the same apply with shoes and sporran for a kilt outfit? I have brown wingtips I could wear for a better match, but also really like ghillie brogues with a kilt. Not only do I want to honor the kilt by wearing everything correctly, but I also want to honor our friends by looking my best for their wedding. Advice from the rabble will be most appreciated!

I haven't worn my kilts frequently in some time, and I think it's partly because I just don't find it comfortable to wear them around my belly button. I tend to wear them with a polo or button down short sleeve in warm weather or a sweater in cold weather, so I think they'll still look fine at the my pants waist. What are your favorite kilts that are made to be worn at the jeans waist--both tartan and non-tartan? Thanks in advance!

Payson, Utah, 2026-07-10 (Fri) through 07-11 (Sat), Scottish Festival / Highland Games
https://www.paysonscottishfestival.org/

July 10th - 5pm - 9pm
July 11th - 9am - 6pm
Free entry and street parking.
If you don't get there early you'll have to walk a bit.

The root beer / cream soda vendor (Bison Brew) is very popular. On Saturday, the line is often ~40 minutes.
Because I'm sloshing with root beer at the festival, I get unchilled bottles of Ginger Beer (McBride's) to drink at a later date.
The cranachan and haggis (Rebecca's Baked Bliss) are enjoyable, but you may not want to eat your fill of them, because they're pricey and the portions are small.
But there are a number of less expensive food vendors to fill in the gaps.

If you want Irn-Bru (various vendors) or Welsh cakes, you'll want to grab them earlier rather than later, as they sell out.

Are Septs authenticity in question by many these days?

Fairly new to the world of things Scot..
My grandmums maiden name was NOBLE...ala sept of Mackintosh.

I tend to want to dig below the surface when I take an interest in a thing, and so in my looking into how some septs became associated with their respective clans, I ran across this tidbit:

Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, GCVO WS (1893-1971) Lord Lyon
King of Arms, 1945-1969, after being Carrick Pursuivant and
Albany Herald in the 1930s, makes mention in the book, Clan Septs
and Regiments of the Scottish Highlands, 1952, co-authored by
Frank Adam that;
'Septs must be regarded as a rather wonderful effort of
imagination,' and 'The very word "sept" is delusive and no
serious attention can now be attached to Skene's theories
about septs.'

Are there any resources out there that explain in any degree of detail, how the various septs came to be associated with the major clans?

Kind thanks,
~Rich
