Nobody gave me a hard time about it. The only comment that I got that sticks with me is that of an elderly Scottsman who said to me as I walked by"It's good to see a young Scot in his kilt"
Didn't have the heart to tell him I was Canadian.

I wonder if there's a ned tartan?
Would be great to wear it with a Bergaus jacket, white hose tucked over it (somehow) and white lacoste trainers.
Would be rather attention-seeking in Glasgow city centre, to say the least!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I'm sure you'll be well received, but not all Scots appreciate 'The Kilt'. I well remember my Edinburgh relatives (who knew I liked to wear one) inviting me out to dinner with the comment "You're not going to embarrass us by wearing your kilt are you?"
The Kilt is my delight !

Looks like I'll take a kilt, tank of course in clan tartan, and likely wear it on days we're wandering through the country, hiking, etc. Seems a shame to me to wear it here at those times and not do so there. Thanks for all the comments.

Being around Edinburgh the last few weekends I've seen atleast 5 people kilted per day. Some really nice tartans as well!
I forgot to mention in my previous post - from what I've heard about kilts in N. Ireland (especially around Belfast and Derry), they're mainly worn by pipe bands during Orange parades... some may draw a conclusion that wearing the kilt in these areas as being an association with these organisations. Although - as others have mentioned the kilt can easily symbolise some sort of neutrality.

There is. It's called the Burberry check and is proudly worn by members of that underclass described as neds, chavs, nedettes or whatever. Whilst not so prevalent as in recent times, no self-respecting "ned" would have been seen without his Burberry baseball cap and matching accessories (knife, bottle of Buckfast, expensive trainers).
None of this should discourage you from wearing your kilt (tartan of course) as it will be well received. Scots like to see the kilt being worn even if they don't tend do do so very much themselves.

Of-course!
I don't think anyone in Glasgow will own a Thomson Camel kilt now, at least for several decades!

Neds need never feel under-dressed at a black tie occasion since the creation of the following:

Paul that is simply hideous!
Some of the ugliest Highland Dress I've ever seen has been the displays at kilt hire shops in Scotland.
One was a white Prince Charlie with white shirt, white bow tie, a plain white kilt, a white sporran with white tassels, pure white hose with white flashes, and... wait for it... black ghillies! Oh to get so close to horrid perfection but then miss the mark...

I'm thinking that they probably had a version with white ghillies. But it also came with a bridal veil.
