True enough, Alan, and I agree - It's always great to see a young woman sporting tartan. I may be splitting hairs, but a young woman wearing a tartan prom dress gets a round of applause from me, while a young woman wearing a long tartan gown gets a standing ovation.
Both are good, one is better.

Here is my daughter (in green) and her friends going to prom 2 years ago. I thought they all dressed very well

All of them very elegantly dressed, Redhawk, although the lack of tartan is a pity.
Cygnus’s picture of the lass in tartan is lovely, but for that tattoo on her arm. But today’s youngsters think nothing of it. My daughter and her fiancé both sport tattoos.

Mike

That was the idea of the picture, actually; to show something that was unmistakably vintage on a lass that was obviously "modern".

I am of the age that you guys are refering to as "your daughters age" (I turn 18 next spring) and personally i wouldn't be caught dead wearing a dress more than a few inches above my knees. I would LOVE to be able to wear that dress that Danwell posted, but alas, there are very very few occasions that i feel it would be appropriate.
That being said, I also love tattoos and piercings and plan on getting one or two.

Welcome to the forum M'nM's! It's good to get your perspective on the topic.
Yeah...prom dresses. girls really have the short end of the deal on Prom dresses. Someday you'll probably be a bridesmaid, too and the same grief applies there. The dress you wear to either of those occasions MUST be bought, and is unwearable for pretty much any other event in your life. If your girlfriend who asks you to be a bridesmaid has the sense to pick out bridesmaid dresses that are actually wearable at something besides a wedding, then tell her that you love her!
Guys are lucky. Most guys can rent tuxedos for Prom or Wedding. I only owned a tuxedo ever, because I'm a musician and I needed it to play in concerts. But that was a black tuxedo anyway, and I didn't wear black to either of my HS proms or my wedding. More or less the same thing goes for the kilt. A guy can buy a kilt and rent the prince Charlie, shirt, shoes and so on. The kilt is great, he can wear it at al sorts of things, if he owns it. If he rents a kilt, then he's not even out that much money.
You lasses definitely get the short end of the stick, here.

I borrowed a dress, and didn't have a date, but prom was great, especially after most the people left

Unfortunatly, im not allowed to attend prom, dated or dateless, so that is one less place i will be able to wear a "fancy" dress... but on the fact that i hate dresses in general makes this ok :P
The only actual full dress i own is provided to me by my music teacher and returned at the end of each Year. If someone decides to put me as their bridesmaid in a dress at all, i shalt smite them :P
I was just merely hoping to bring attention that not all "young" girls are into Micro-clothing. Some of us at least pretend to have an ounce of modesty.

all manner of things
At least in my neighborhood, Emmmmms, many unexpected things have happened between age almost 18 and now. Whilst too many of them involve accumulated poundage, several more have involved accumulated clothing and opportunities to dress up. I hope your horizons expand in pleasantly exciting ways and that you are able to meet those opportunities with your same good attitude. I know I didn't go to a prom, if we had one in those days. Somehow I got over the lack of the experience.
May your blessings multiply and your times accumulate long,
M'll
