So, I was thinking about doing some primitive camping in a belted plaid, and I thought this would make for a pretty legit kilt brooch. It is multi-purpose too. What do you all think?

I just realized that if you watch the youtube video, he basically puts on a belted plaid!!!!!! Minus the length and pleats.

True, but it comes in two different sizes. Also, I just love flint and steel fires.

I've got a brass one of similar fashion minus multi use parts...Here's a tip-file the last half inch or so of the pin square. It will part the fibers, instead of cutting them. Makes a heckuva hole in your shirt if you don't reinforce the material, square or round pin.

Hey, and if you file the squared end of the "striker" portion, you got yourself a screwdriver!

As an fyi on flint and steel fires...I own a pair of pistols, THOSE are my flint and steel! I don't use my battle flints to strike, just junk chunks. Fewer bruised knuckles and profanities that way...

You'll need some char cloth and fire fungus to go in your kit, Brute. Perhaps you could work a waterproof pouch into your sporran.

Pins (clasps or fibulae really) of that style are not intended to pierce fabric. There is a body, and a shaft that may be pointed for appearance, but usually is only tapered and blunt.

In many instances, but not all, the pin is rotated to open the metal body. Fabric is bunched and pulled through the opening of the body. Then the pin is rotated on the curved metal body, over/under the bunch, and made to span the gap by engaging the metal body just so.

Check out "Roman pins" and other names and you will find many examples.
