No such thing as an MOD sporran?!?!
I was considering bidding on a plain sporran that looks very much like the daywear sporrans seen in the military. Nearly identical from the limited photos.
I asked the seller (by the name of xmarksthescot, by the way) about it:
"Dear xmarksthescot,
Is this an actual MOD sporran or is this a reproduction? Thank you.
- theofficialbren"
Here was his reply:
"Dear theofficialbren,
There is no such thing as an mod sporran the jobs are contracted out to smaller companies / it's impossible to tell , came locally from an ex junior officer in Perth
- xmarksthescot"
This seems inaccurate somehow. I didn't see the often-remarked-upon arrowhead marking that many government issues pieces of kit usually posess. The sporran looks darn near spot on. Maybe it was surplus? Maybe it was a reproduction? I'm fone either way. Just curious about the accuracy of his reply.
Thank you, gents.

Many officers have their own equipment made privately to MoD specification. Being private property, it would not have the broad arrow stamped on it. This might be one of those.

Thanks, Chas. I didn't know that. Thank you for the information.
I saw another one, very similar to the MOD-styled sporran. It is offered by Ebay user Bauhaus-Boy. Any feedback on him or his merchandise?
Thanks.

Chas is totally correct Bren, but anything made and paid for by the goverment will have the relevant markings.

Bren, I cant comment on the MOD sporran but Bauhaus boy aka Carse of Gowrie is major on line EBay retailer. I have had dealings with him and have always had good service. I would say he is as good if not better than many eBay sellers.

While it is possible that this is a privately contracted sporran, I'm not sure that he is correct in saying "there is no such thing as an MOD sporran". I could swear I've seen ex-military sporrans with the arrowhead stamp, which would imply that there are, indeed, government-owned-and-issued sporrans.

He can be a bit pricey, but his stuff is good quality.

I own an ex army issue day sporran. I also sold one to another forum member. Neither had the broad arrowhead stamp but I know they were army issue. I think the arrowhead went out of use after a certain point in time.
The more recent army daywear sporrans are exceptional quality (which is why I bought two) but I am not sure that the New Royal Regiment are actually issued with day sporrans any more (I could be wildly wrong about this), I think maybe they only get horsehair sporrans for parade now?
Anyway as far as I know, the more recent ones were contracted to E.C. Snaith under the brand Firmin and Sons. The packaging for the sporran badge has Firmin and Sons written on it along with the issue no.s I understand that this firm were acquired by E.C. Snaith at some point (again, maybe I'm wrong).
These ones are most likely the same item, if not, perfect replicas (without the regimental badge):
