    Sporran strap width?

A minor point, to be sure, but is there a consensus on the correct width for a plain leather sporran strap for day wear? Commercially available straps seem to be in the 1/2" - 3/4" range. I've used a 1" dress belt as a sporran strap and was wondering if I was comitting an offense against tradition and/or good taste.

Absolutely no offence committed. I think mine are 3/4 inch, but no reason that they can't be an inch. Whatever keeps your sporran up.

If I recall correctly, you want to be careful of using a </unmentionable> belt. Some belts use some sort of "synthetic goo" to round the outside edge. This can rub off and do nasty things to your kilt. As for the width? I think as long as it fits the loop in the back of your sporran and it looks okay to you in the mirror, then your good.

Someone with a better memory will probably add the missing details. I'm sorry about the imprecise description but it's Friday and ... oooh look, shiny....

Right! I always go with 3/4" and my sporran straps are bespoke from McRostie's of Glasgow. However, since McRostie's items are indeed bespoke, they can make a sporran strap of any width and length.

    Cheers,

I took a 1 1/4" belt and notched it down to 5/8", looks and works awesome.

Sometime back I ordered a 5/8 inch all leather sporran strap with trigger snaps to replace the standard chain belt. I got this from a former member of the forum, but I'm not sure he is still in business. I have now made myself a 3/4 inch all leather strap with trigger snaps and I like this width much better. More substantial and comfortable than the 5/8 inch width. Just personal opinion, but a 1 inch belt would be too wide for my taste, unless you have a really large sporran! On an interim basis though, a commercial belt could work, but as Kiltedrennie mentions, be careful that the dye or finish doesn't rub off on your kilt especially if it gets wet!

Here is a picture of my current strap:
