			Kilts worn by Celtic Thunder

Anyone see the concert on PBS and the kilts they and some of the band wear? All black.
I was wondering where one could purchase one of those kilts for a reasonable sum. The barbering school I am attending allows you to wear "black pants, skirts, shorts, etc. etc." As long as they are black and professional, they are good to go.

Also I wonder if you could get a "plaid" worked in by using various shade sof black..jet black, ebony, glossy, charcoal, etc.

 Thoughts?

SWK offers a heavyweight black with a shadow tartan. You might also consider Freedom Kilts who can make an all black in poly/cotton.

The Kilts used by Celtic Thunder were custom made by Howie Nicklesby of 21st Century Kilts in Edinburgh. And no, they are not what you would call reasonable if compared to some others.
But for a full Traditional Kilt that screams CUSTOM you can't get much better.

The give away that these are 21st Century Kilts is the lightening bolt Kilt Pins that are Howie's trademark.

Stillwater's heavyweight black "shadow tartan" is very nice-looking and affordable. You can get similar fabric from the UK mills through your favorite kiltmaker, and plain black wool, cotton, and assorted blends can be found from our sponsors and elsewhere.
I think the black shadow tartan or plain black give a very nice look for professional wear when we want to "blend in" or meet a dress code.

The shadow tartans are all one shade of yarn, with a rectangular pattern in the weave. Some others have different shades of gray and so on, like SWK's acrylic "Nightstalker" tartan. Check Xmarks for photos of the SWK standard Nightstalker, I think it looks lighter in real life than on the Web site.

Depending on how you stretch the definition of "black" there are choices like the Highland Granite tartan. http://www.lochcarron.com/tartanstro...d_granite.html (And Strome makes up into a fine, fine kilt.)
 Then there are the various "shadow" tartans . . . http://www.scotweb.co.uk/tartan/Dark-Island/40034 http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tar....aspx?ref=5931

There are actually some true Black on Black Tartans.
For just one example Marton Mills produces the Ben Dubh, Black Isle, and Black Shadow Tartans. These three are available in 13oz Wool.

These are true Black on Black Tartans. You cannot see the Tartan Pattern until you turn the fabric or it moves in the light.

There are basically two ways to produce a Black on Black Tartan Pattern in fabric.
One is the twist the yarns of the Weft in one direction and twist the yarns of the Warp in the opposite direction.
The other is to weave with the Warp true Black and the weft with a very dark Gray. Then after the fabric is woven re-dye the fabric all Black.

I have tried to get some photos of some of the Kilts we have made from the Ben Dubh Tartan but without movement they don't allow you to see the Tartan Pattern.

They are also a pain to pleat up which may be the reason most less expensive makers do not use them.

Kind of like the "architectural" flames I did on a motorcycle once...it's got little details in it that you don't see until you start looking, then it gobsmacks you with its elegance.

I just read the latest newsletter from Frugal Corner. Mark posts there that they are the ones who kilted the hosts on the local PBS station when it ran this concert.
