Our Alabama friend, *Profane James*, will probably pipe in and give you some information. He has an interest, the start of a collection and clue to a supplier.

Knitting hose garters is really simple. You use the Garter stitch.

If knitting flat - cast on enough stitches to make 1 inch wide.
Then knit a row, knit a second row, knit another row. Repeat until you have a length about 18 to 24 inches or enough to go around the leg three times.

    Nothing could be simpler.

If you want to change things up a bit, purl each row instead of knitting each row.

This is the Garter stitch. It can appear a bit lumpy or bumpy but has really good stretch.

If you want something smoother looking knit one row - reverse the knitting - knit the second row (effectively purling the second row) - repeat to the desired length.

If you are knitting in the round cast on twice the number of stitches as in flat knitting. Knit, knit, knit some more, then knit. Eventually you will 1) reach the desired length or 2) run out of yarn or 3) have really tired fingers and a great big smile.

There is also the option of not hand knitting your garters. You could do what I did and find a Hand-cranked sock knitting machine.

In addition to making your own kilt hose you can knit really thin lanyards, hose garters, mittens, and scarves.

    Welcome Will
Where is this sun you speak of??? I remember seeing some last week.

    Garters.... Easy
    8ply wool
    4mm (size 8) needles
    Cast on 8-10 stitches
Knit, knit, knit, and keep knitting.
    Cast off.

    Another method.
As above but knit long enough to fold over and peek out from the cuff.
Fold over and join leaving a loop big enough to thread elastic through. Slip over the sock and fold down cuff.

Now you get to the fun part.
Even? Uneven? What type of knot/tie? Fringe? No fringe?
There are heaps of threads and pictures here just use the search function.

Another tip I've found useful.... If you know anybody disabled the elastic straps that come with leg bags are great! (Bloody useless for holding the bag - so most use other types they buy seperatly)
If you're in the Eastern suburbs I have a stash collected off clients that I'm happy to give you.
