Patching a hole in Amerikilt
Early this autumn I was sitting at the table on our outdoor patio. I fell asleep smoking and burnt a hole in the top apron of my black Amerikilt. The hole was about 1/2 inch wide and 3/4 inch long. I sewed it closed, but due to the size of the hole it was very noticeable.
I figured I would just use it as a work kilt or lounging around the house kilt. But then I got an idea, and for me these days that in itself is something. The hole is down somewhat near the lower right hand corner of the apron. I found some sew on patches in the shape of a shield on Ebay. The seller offered clan crests with a background of the clan tartan, national flags, etc.
Due to the size of the patches and the location of the hole it would take 2 patches placed with an offset and about 1/8 of an inch apart. So I ordered the Kennedy Clan Crest with the Kennedy tartan as a background, and as the second patch I ordered the Scotland Rampant Lion. I ordered enough patches to do this to all of my Amerikilts. So the clan crest patch will be in the lower right hand corner with the rampant lion patch offset diagonally to it.
In my mind at least, I think this will look quite nice, adding some colorful contrast to the solid color of the kilt. I'll post some pictures once I get the patches and have them sewn on. I got the idea from the shield shaped patch that USA Kilts uses on their casual kilts.
