History of the lion rampant flag?

The lion rampant flag remains the personal banner of the monarch and use of this flag is restricted under the Act of the Parliament of Scotland. I see the lion rampant flag quite a lot at highland games and other Scottish events, but have heard that permission from the English monarch is required before displaying this flag - though no one enforces this. Because of the act of union, the king/queen of England is also the king/queen of Scotland.

The flag of Scotland representing the cross of the Christian martyr Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, on a blue field.

Why do people display the lion rampant flag rather than the Scottish flag?

Actually the Scottish King became the King of England under James VI (I).

From Wiki: "The Acts of Union were a pair of Parliamentary Acts passed in 1706 and 1707 by, respectively, the Parliament of England and the Parliament of Scotland, to put into effect the terms of the Treaty of Union which had been negotiated between the two countries. The Acts joined the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland (previously separate states, with separate legislatures but with the same monarch) into a single Kingdom of Great Britain.

The two countries had shared a monarch for about 100 years (since the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when King James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne from his cousin, Queen Elizabeth I). Although described as a Union of Crowns, until 1707 there were in fact two separate Crowns resting on the same head. There had been three attempts in 1606, 1667, and 1689 to unite the two countries by Acts of Parliament, but it was not until the early 18th century that the idea had the will of both political establishments behind them, albeit for rather different reasons."

Oh, my apologies.. I didn't think this would be considered political, was just looking for a bit of history and assumed everyone here would be mature enough to talk about it. Should I delete the thread?

I hope this does not get closed because of its political nature - though that seems inevitable.

The Lion Rampant is the Royal Flag of Scotland, it is flown, for instance, over the offices of the Secretary of State for Scotland due to his position in the scheme of things.

The flag should not be flown on a flagpole without leave, but can be carried by any British subject (and if anyone else wanted to wave one I doubt there would be any objection).

Although we hear a lot about British Citizens these days I believe that legally we Britons are subjects of the crown, the Queen being our leige lord, and so the country we live in, Ireland Wales England or Scotland is a secondary matter.

Maybe people like the Lion Rampant because it is more brightly coloured than the saltire, I do rather doubt that it is regarded as English.

This is certainly getting political. It's perfectly fine to discuss the history of this flag. However, stating one's personal feelings about a governing body is not.

Let's please keep this thread on track with the title or it will have to be closed.

Thank you. I had spent a few minutes thinking of the best place for the thread and chose off-topic.. my mind must have missed the Heraldry & Tartans section. I'll keep this in mind for the future. I'm glad someone's watching out for us

So politics can be discussed retrospectively as long as no point of view is given?
