National Welsh Tartan
As someone of welsh descent, I have to say I am rather disappointed in the welsh nat'l tartan. Does anyone know of any variations? The traditional tartan just looks too christmas-sy (if that's a word). I have seen pix of people with kilts in the national tartan and it just looks....boring. I know I can expect some flaming for my comments here, but in my defense, I am just not personally inspired and I would love to know about alternatives. Perhaps USA kilts could some up with a new tartan for Welsh Americans :-)

I wear a St. David's National, and like it pretty good. That's just me though...

There's a red / green one and another variation that's magenta (redish purple) and darker green.

Well this is very educational. I don't recall a red/green version. The only version I remember is the purple one. Thanks for the info.

I too have Welsh blood.
What works for me is USA Kilts Prince of Wales tartan. Yes, its a fashion tartan, not official, but I love it. I have a dragon kilt pin on it just in case someone wonders.

(pin's not in this pic)
My only regret is I didn't have it sewn up in the semi-traditional style instead of the casual. May still do that.

Digital cameras and tartans don't mix well sometimes.
Here's a couple better shots of the Prince of Wales....was in the wind though.

I have to agree that the Welsh National Tartan does make me think of Christmas. There are other Welsh tartans out there however. There is the County of Powry, and the Pride of Wales too. Check out the Wales Tartan Centre.

There is a photo of a gent wearing a Welsh National tartan cilt with a Welsh rugby jersey, and the combo actually looks good.

Flairball beat me to it!
Not every tartan can please everybody, I have a Prince of Wales too but am less keen on it than the Brithwe Dewi Sant (Wales National).
None of the family tartans on display on the Wales Tartan Centre site are "official" as such, but you might find one of them more to your liking ozone.

The Welsh National tartan I think Ozone is referring to is the original one from 1967.

Since the colors of those of the Welsh flag, green, red and white, that is why it can look "Christmassy" to some.
The version pictured is a custom weave using a sage green, which makes it look less Christmassy. House of Edgar stocks it in their Old & Rare range of medium weight cloth in two versions. The modern is a very straightforward green, red and white, and is probably the "Christmassy" version you have seen. They also do a muted version with a lighter shade of green and a purplish red.
Aye,
Matt
