wedding toasts
Again, I sense that this question may be a little OT and ask forgiveness...
I am the father of the bride at an upcoming wedding. I will be wearing a kilt for the first time (although it has inspired me to acquire two other high quality kilts, an Argyll jacket, and accouterments).
But at some point I am going to be asked to make comment...offer a paternal benediction if you will. I would like conclude with something pithy of Scots Gaelic origin --better a bit anglicized--and perhaps end with a Gaelic blessing (in Gaelic).
Anyone have any suggestions and...hopefully...a phonetic pronunciation to go with it?
Thanks

Gu meal sibh bhur naidheachd

"Congratulations to both of you"
Tha sinn an dochas gum bi sibh an comhnaidh cho sona 's a tha sibh an-diugh.
(Ha sheen an dawchuss goom be shiv ung kawnee choe sonnuh suh ha shiv un joo)
"We hope that you are always as happy as you are today"
Slainte,
steve

Ooooooooo somewhere, somewhere -?- I have a little booklet of Scottish and Irish toasts. I'll have to see if I can find it in the clutter!

Lang may your lum reek is broad Scots for "Long may the smoke rise up from your hearth", which suggests growing old together, in front of the fire, without strife or want.

And if you want to be somewhat tounge-in-cheek, you can always add, wi' other people's coal!

Of course you could always bring the house down by concluding with a raucous; "Mozaltov!"

I believe that they're both Irish, but I'm fond of these two :

I've always been partial to this one:
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
and the rain fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again my friend
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow
May the soft winds freshen your spirit
May the sunshine brighten your heart
May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you
And may God enfold you in the mantle of His love.
May God be with you and bless you
May you see your children’s children.
May you be poor in misfortunes and rich in Blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness
from this day forward.
But rich or poor, quick or slow,
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.
May the joys of today
Be those of tomorrow.
