    Family Tree - UK Tracing

To assist members trying to trace their family trees, here are three websites of interest. I am going to do them as three separate threads so as not to mix everything up.

The first is freebmd. Yes, I know that it sounds like a porno site, but it stands for Free Births, Marriages and Deaths.

    http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Click search and you come to the working page. Choose the type of search, then the surname and first name. Middle names tend not to add to much to the pot. John Jehosephat Jones and John J Jones, search equally well. Try to eliminate areas you don't want. For example, no information for Scotland (different website), the earliest possible date is 1837 (so don't search for January 1843).

The records are in quarters so 16th January 1902 is recorded as March 1902. If you search for John Smith you will find 14 trillion billion million of them. Freebmd will only display 3000 at a time so cut the search right down. Do it year, by year if you have to.

When searching deaths, have a calculator to hand. Freebmd will give you a date and an age at death. Birth dates can then be worked out.

The answer freebmd gives you is the name, Registration District and a number on the register. By clicking on the number you can come to an actual image of the official registration. Not the actual birth/marriage/death certificate, but the bare bones registration. Once you know the Registration District and the number you can get a certified copy of the original certificate.

Remember 'Spelling is an adventure - not a science'. Mac, Mc and Mc are all the same as far as registration is concerned.

Be open minded as to ages. Any event that happened in December, might not be recorded till January. That is then in a different quarter and year. Giving the impression that a person was a year older or younger as the case might be.

    Regards

    Chas

Useful tip Chas, but I am puzzled. Why can't you search for January 1843 if the records start in 1837?

Sorry Alex - typing too fast. It was supposed to be 1834 (or any date before 1837).
