My latest project - skunk hunting sporran

I have always loved the look of skunk and when the opportunity came up last week for me to get a skunk pelt I went for it. To my surprise skunk leather is far thinner then I had expected, somewhere between snake and goat skin in thickness, so I backed it with another leather. You can see how thin the skin is in this image.

The pelt was not wide enough to make the front AND sides of a sporran so I decided on making hunting sporrans. This last holiday weekend was spent turning this...

I am happy with how the sporrans worked out and my wife thinks I look good in skunk.

I am surprised that a skunk was not enough pelt for your needs. I was able to make my last sporran with a marmot (groundhog) that covered the sides with enough left over for the tassels.

Did you make two sporrans (looking at the photo)?

Yes, I did make the two sporrans with the one pelt. The skunk was casket skinned with the picture taken before I flattened it out. I barely had enough fur for these and there is very little left of the skunk pelt, mostly the head and tail. The circular fur parts on the top of the sporrans came from sections of the pelt that were not wide enough for the main fur sections, one close to the top of the head and the other from the base of the tail just before the fur became coarse.

Marmot, that is one idea I had not thought about. I was thinking I would probably go with goat or fox for my next fur sporran so I could make it full fur and now I will be wondering about a full fur yellow bellied marmot sporran.

I love it! Those that know me will tell you I'm a big fan of skunk, I'm always on the lookout for skunk accessories and whatnot!

I'm glad I misunderstood this. I was trying to figure out what kind of a special sporran you would need to hunt skunks. Maybe a built in gas mask and bandoleer of tomato juice cans?
