New Pipes WIP
I'm currently working on another set of Highland pipes. This time, for myself...
The last set was finished a while ago, and is now in the hands of it's new owner:

This was the last set

And, this is the set I'm working on currently:

African blackwood being roughed, from a "square" billet. This part is rather messy...

And this is where I'm at currently with this set, roughed pieces. I'm missing a bass-drone top as I managed to make a mistake on the last one... (expensive mistake) but I'll be able to use the piece for (blackwood) mounts on another set.
I was very pleased with the sound of the last set, especially the balance between tenors and bass (just using standard Ezeedrones). I decided that it didn't make much sense to be a pipemaker and still play on pipes made by someone else (even though they are nice pipes!), so these ones are for me!!!
Will keep the thread updated as work progresses! (including recordings once they're up and playing!)
Cheers!
Michael

Woo, I can't wait to see what "Turns" up in this thread. Keep the updates coming.
Sorry to hear about the oops with one of your billets, I'm glad it's salvageable. That's always incredibly frustrating.

Haha ;)
It wasn't such a big deal with the bass top, just that one of the drills went slightly off centre... Anyway, the piece isn't completely ruined... but I wouldn't have been happy with it! :S
Cheers!

I wish I could afford a lathe and had a place to set one up. I could have lots of fun with one of those for sure. Very nice my friend. Keep it up. Do you make chanters or just the drones and stocks?

I don't make chanters. I haven't found it necessary: most people will either have their solo chanter of choice or the band chanter.
The space is the main thing. If you're willing to keep your eyes peeled there are some bargains to be had in terms of pre-loved machining equipment. But, indeed the space is an issue. Since moving to my new house (about a year ago) I've actually been able to set up a workshop of my own- prior I was lugging everything to a local guild where I had to make do with the equipment and setups that were there. Now I'm free to work in my own space/time and making the adjustments/adaptations necessary to my own machinery.
(It really is an awful lot of fun too...)
Cheers!

Re: New Pipes WIP
Have you ever made a chanter? Don't you have to build your own tapered reamer in order to get the bore correct?
