I remember piping in the CNE Warrior's Day parade one year in the late 1970s. A number of grade 1 pipe bands were in the parade because they were in Toronto for the associated Intercontinental competition and the week-long tattoo. We were approaching the gates to the CNE grounds when the sky opened up and we were suddenly caŭght in one of those tremendously heavy, soaking southern Ontario downpours. Like most of the grade 1 bands in the parade, we were wearing full dress and we got soaked to the skin. As was the practice at the time, all the grade 1 bands in the parade were invited to the nearby Toronto Scottish armoury for drinks in the sergeants' mess. The mess was packed with pipers and drummers, each wrapped in 15-20 pounds (dry weight) of soaking wet wool. The stench was staggering!
