Gleniff kilts
Hi out there.
Has anyone bought a kilt from Gleniff Highlandwear in the U.K. and if so what are they like. They sell 8 yard 16oz wool worsted kilts in a range of 100 tartans for £199 and make the proud boast "If there is a finer example of the traditional kilt, we have yet to see it". Now I'm a great believer in the old adage you only get what you pay for, and this seems too good to be true, however if they are as good as they claim then I wouldn't mind getting one at that price. I'd welcome any feedback from the kilted community !
Yours Aye 'Freddie'

Well, I'd like to know as well...I see that they offer Black Isle as one of their tartan choices...

Some interesting stuff on there. You Utilikilt type guys may like the cammo sporrans. It looks like they are using the Marton Mills Jura line of wool based on the tartans they are listing. I'd be interested in hearing any input anyone has too.
I really like to modern jackets too http://www.glenniff.co.uk/modern-jacket-1.htm

It looks like they're re-sellers. The place where they get their kilts and jackets is one of my wholesale suppliers in Glasgow.
Since the idea of camo sporrans was brought up... what do you guys think of a camo sporran (actually... the exact one pictured on their site)? How much would you pay for one... what's a fair price?

Rocky, maybe that is worth a new thread for cammo sporrans. A lot of the guys that would be ordering those may not look at threads dealing with companies that do traditioanl style tartan kilts. I would think $50 would be fair for a cammo sporran myself.

I can now answer my own question - they're brilliant ! I decided to buy myself one of these kilts for £199 in the modern Hume tartan and everything they claim is true. The materials are first class, the pleating is excellent (and I only bought an 8 yard one whereas other kiltmakers insist I have a 9 yard kilt) and it was extreemly well packaged, being sent full length (folded lengthways) and wrapped in bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard and then put in a heavy duty plastic bag. When I opened it the pleats wern't stitched down (which was a good thing as I hate cutting the basting stitches, I'm terrified I'm going to damage the kilt) but because of the way it was packaged they didn't need to be. In fact it really was 'ready to wear straight out of the box'. I could have had a 9 yard version for an extra £40, but as I was a bit wary of the cheap price, and I didn't intend this kilt to be worn on dress occasions (just a more expensive 'casual'), I just opted for the 8 yard. I needn't have worried though because this kilt will look spectacular on any dress occasion. To be honest I don't think even if I had opted for a 9 yarder it would have been any better than the 8 yard one. I really can't fault them, and I'm busy saving now for one in ancient Buchanan, but I will pay the extra and get a 9 yard kilt in that tartan as I'm sure that tartan is more difficult to pleat.

That is a pretty good price. It's a tad more than I could get the Top Value 8 yarder from kilt store, so I'm wondering how they would compare.

I know I have to be careful because this site is sponsored by the kilt Store, but to have bought the equivelant kilt from them would have cost me £232 (and I don't know if postage would be extra - Glenniff post free). It would have to be a very good kilt indeed to be any better. As I said I can't fault them, and I've had four top quality kilts from Scottish kiltmakers in my time.
The Kilt is my delight !
