    Gow Kilt Pleating

    Hi Guys,

I am planning on a new kilt in autumn/winter and Gow modern is one of the tartans I consider (the other two are Smith modern or Macpherson Hunting ancient).

Does anyone have a Gow kilt and possibly pictures of it's pleating?
I guess to sett is the only choice here?!

    Thanks!

Pleat to the red line bordered by alternating green/blue, blue/green if the sett is large enough. If the sett is small print to every other red line bordered by green/blue.

I once entertained the idea of having a kilt done up in the Gow (Smith) tartan. My recommendation would be to have it pleated to the sett. I have a good mate, and a fellow Macpherson cousin, who has a kilt made up in this particular tartan (Lochcarron Strome - ancient colours). I'll contact him and ask if he could send me a few photos showing the pleats.

Here's what the kilt looks like from the front, which I realise doesn't help you, but I thought I'd share the photos anyways.

    Thanks again Kyle!

I know about Bill's Gow Kilt and had the idea of contacting myself. His visits here seem to be rare...
It might be nice pleatetd to the stripe also but the structure of tartan seem to require a pleating to sett.

Oh, why didn't you have it finally?

By the way I saw you seem to have changed your kilt wardrobe completely...
I like the earthy shades you are now wearing. It would be nice to see more pictures of your new stuff too...
I would like to have a kilt jacket in this special brown/beige shade often shown in older pictures combined with fawn hose as shown here

So thanks again for your help!

Very smart look, Tom! I have an old copy of that wee book featuring those gorgeous illustrations. Excellent examples of Highland Dress worn in a traditional manner. Yes, it's no mystery that I am quite fond of the more earthy colours, and an overall subtle palette in regards to Highland Dress. I didn't pull the trigger on a kilt in the Gow tartan, because I don't wish to own too many kilts. For me, less is more and it simplifies my life. I sold off all of my kilts, sans one, as well as several other items that I no longer had any interest in. Also, I'd rather stick to Macpherson and Chattan tartans. The only exception will be a kilt done up in the U.S. Marine Corps tartan (reproduction colours) from D.C. Dalgliesh that I plan to order in the iminent future.

Being a Smith myself, I've spent many hours pondering over the many tartan options that we are blessed with. Personally, I'm not too fond of the Gow tartans, due to the checkered pattern they possess and the fact that It's hard to pleat them to the stripe (Not a big fan of pleating to the sett). However, there's something about the colors that I find really intriging and actually quite pleasant.

Recently, MacPherson Modern (To the ? stripe) and Smith Ancient (To the red stripe), are at the top of my list. When I come up with the money, I'll most likely purchase one of the two. I'm in no way trying to persuade you to do one thing or another, but am merely just putting my personal thoughts and opinions out on the table. Whatever your decision, I definitely want to see some pics of your new addition (Bet I'm not the only one).

    Cheers,

    Cooper Smith

    Hello Cooper,

    thanks for your reply.
I often read about a connection of Smith with the MacFarlanes but couln't find any further information. Do you know more about it?

It might be not too easy to pleat it to the stripe but it is an attractive sett and rarely seen.
I suppose to sett would be ok for me also.
(My GF wants me to get a Macpherson Hunting ancient anyway...)

Pleating Smith can be difficult to because the sett is very large.
A change between red and yellow might be an attractive alternativ as shown in this thread...

I have a 5 yard Smith ancient with an adventurous pleating but very personal. Almost to sett.

Unfortunately, I do not have any knowledge of a relationship between the MacFarlanes and Smiths. I can totally relate with you wanting to wear a tartan that is rarely seen and Gow definitely fits into that category perfectly. About pleating Smith to the stripe, I tagged you in an existing thread that shows it done wonderfully. It's not impossible and I'm actually very fond of it. On the other hand, I love the alternating pleating to the yellow and red stripe that is showed in the thread you posted a link to. Never would have thought of that. So thanks!

Just incase you have trouble finding the thread. Here are some of the pictures.

I'm just about to order my next one too which will either be Gow Modern or Hunting weathered. Those pics have been really useful to me guys, so thanks.

Anyone got any snaps of a Gow Hunting/Smith weathered kilt?
