Scottish Kilts.net is that the same. There was a sale for 5 yard tanks a couple of weeks ago. It looks great . a bit long perhaps but well made. It fits too. This was the one that's been at the top of the list.

Nope, different companies. I know a bunch of guys on here ordered these kilts. I am really wanting to hear what the 5 yard kilts are like and to see some pics.

    Question Couple questions...

On that 5 yrd. kilt, how many pleats? and how wide and deep are they? I've been interested in one of those, but wonder how the back looks compared to a trad. 8 yrd.

I was reading this thread when my doorbell rang and guess what was waiting in the postman's hand? MY Irish-American 5 yd. kilt. (I'll bet you guessed that.)

I'm no expert but here is my take on it. The fabric is heavy wool (they claim 16oz and I can't dispute that) and feels very nice. The length is good and it fits well. I dont' own a traditional 8yrd so I cannot compare it to one.

I CAN count pleats and mine has 28. If by pleat depth you mean with the pleat closed you slide in a ruler until it hits bottom it's about 1 1/2 inches. If what you mean by wide is flipping pleat open and measuring across then about 3 inches. I measured several and I do have to say they are not perfectly uniform.

All in all for (ahem!) $104.00 American I'm very pleased with it and the service and speed of delivery were very fine.

    Cheers

The pleat face is about one inch the depth is three inches. It's not as fine as an eight yard but that can be a good thing when you drive. As far as pictures they had one in the Irish kilt store a while ago. Or if some one can help me post it here with out thed photo bucket thingy. I'm not very computer literate. I'll try to get someone to take my pic this pm.

Here is my take on the wool 5-yard Irish American kilt I bought from Scottishkilts.net. USPS tried to deliver my kilt yesterday (March 6), but I wasn't home. So, I got it this morning. I ordered the kilt on Feb. 21 and it was shipped from Scotland on March 2. I think this is a very fast.

The kilt has the usual three buckles and straps as well as two sporran loops in the back. The lining inside the kilt is made of a soft, black material (cotton maybe) and extends downward 5.25 inches.

Since I have a 32-inch waist, there are 25 pleats. The kilt is pleated to stripe, which I really like. (Ordering from the website there is no provision for requesting how you want your kilt pleated.)

The appearance (size and number) of the pleats is reasonably close to that of my tank. The difference is not really noticeable unless the two kilts are compared side by side. Pleating is not what I would call precise, but it is satisfactory. The swish factor is almost as good as on my tank.

The kilt fits well at the waist and the hip. However, the length is much shorter than I expected. The website asked for the distance from navel to knee, which I assumed they would than add two inches to for the overall length of the kilt. The measurement I provided was 22 inches and the overall length of the kilt is 22 inches. Luckily, my wife measured the length to the middle of my knee. So, the bottom of this kilt is slightly above the top of my knee, which is traditional for a kilt's length.

Overall, I think this wool kilt was a real bargain for only $117 (including shipping) on sale. I think it would still be a good buy at the full price of around $202. However, I highly recommend you enquire about how their kiltmakers determine a kilt's overall length before submitting your measurements.

I haven't had much time to wear this kilt, but here are a few observations:
*This 5-yard kilt is lighter and much better balanced than my tank. I am going to enjoy wearing this kilt much more than my tank.
*The heavyweight wool isn't overly rough, but it isn't nearly as soft as the pv of my USA Kilt's Casual. Nevertheless, the wool's wrinkle resistence and swish is superior to pv.
