ancestryology dot com, etc
I can't tell from your post how recently your wife's family is said to have come from Scotland, but knowing that will help a great deal. Knowing the full name of some ancestor is also going to help. Once you have those tools, you can search on several different genealogical sites at no cost, at least at first. Just for fun, you might try googling the ancestor, if you have their entire name. If you feel completely lost, you might consult a professional genealogist, who can do wonders, for a fee. Lastly, this sounds like a good excuse to visit Scotland. Any document you might have will be useful- military discharge papers, census listings, old deeds, family bibles, baptism records, birth and marriage certificates, it is all useful.
