    McKilts anyone?

Have any of you gents done business with McKilts in Edinburg?

They have a web site at: http://stirlingwebdesign.net/mckilts/

But they've posted no prices. Claim to be bringing the price of kilts down to be competitive with trousers. They offer both custom and off the rack products.

I wanted to see if anyone here was familiar with their products and prices before coresponding with them.

Well, I have had no dealings with them, and this is the first time I have seen their site, but if you want my opinion, here's a review.

McKilts is a small, friendly, family run dynamic business, specialising in wholesaling quality, imported products for distribution throughout the UK
Translation: We are taking cheap kilts from Pakistan, and selling them in the UK, because American tourists can't tell the difference!

It can be argued the kilt was a Roman invention
And you would very quickly lose that argument!

The application of the use of tartan weave in Scottish kilts started a method to distinguish clans and allegiances in a tribal society.
    No, it did not.

When I tried to click on the pictures of their kilts to get a better view, none of the images loaded up, but from the thumbnail images, they look exactly like the many cheap Pakistanti kilts you'll see on Ebay. Cheap cloth, cheap construction. Great for a Halloween costume. Bad for actual clothing.

You'll note they list no prices. This is because they are a wholesaler. I doubt they sell to the general public, but if you wanted to carry their product in your store you could contact them.

    Just my tuppence.

wouldn't touch them with a bargepole!

Matt, methinks you are a discerning lad!

Those kilts look like they come in a happy meal from McDonalds. McKilt, McDonalds, McNasty.

And it looks like a convulsing crackhead sewed those pleats.

Thanks for the info and opinions gents.

After I posted the question above, I did further investigation and found numerous listings on E-Bay. None were bid above 50 Pounds Sterling, some were under 30 Pounds sterling.

I guess it's like the old saying, ig its too good to be true, it isn't true.

I agree with Matt's excellent review of this website.

As far as I can tell from those photographs (and one can understand why they will not enlarge!!) these 'kilts' appear to be very much the same as the nasty items being sold to the unwary in tacky tourist-traps in Edinburgh, London and many other places.

My advice: avoid such things at all costs - unless you are wanting an expensive tartan car-cleaning cloth.

Minimum quantity is 500 kilts, prices exactly the same as our regular McKilts, with only a tooling up cost of £500.
I thought this was odd as well. "Tooling" happens in manufacturing, not in Kiltmaking.

    fellow kilters,

the last thing i would want to do is throw dispersion upon establishments whose purpose is to further the reach of unbifurcated product.

what i want to emphasize is the impact we, as a whole, have upon the unbifurcated (re)sellers market. as an entity, and as small in number as we are in the greater scheme of things, Xmarks and the members therein wield tremendous power. Xmarks is quickly becoming the deFacto web site for "The" Kilted experience. having such power Xmarks is quickly gaining a high level of respect and the admiration of hundreds, if not thousands, of men who appreciate and understand the complexities of creating and wearing the kllt.

We have the weight and we have the ability to sway markets. In essence, we have investment in a multitude of Kilt making enterprises and in our numbers, have the ability to shut down those with poor performance. But of course, that is not our purpose. Our purpose is to inform the un-informed and unbifurcate the bifurcated.

Are you saying folks should not warn others away from shoddy merchandise?

    I disagree.

I asked for information because I had never heard of these MacKilt people. I don't have money to spare for a piece of junk, and I greatly appreciate the heads up about the lack of quality.

Not warning of poor quality is doing people a disservice, and will not promote the kilted lifestyle in any way.

    Just my MNSHO.
