More Kilted Cavalry
A ladyfriend sent me this pic today. New to me. A beautiful pic

Great photo, Ron. Do you know the breed of the horse? Looks to be a good sized animal. The front hooves remind me a little of a Clydesdale.

The hooves are far too dainty for it to be a heavy breed - the feathering around the hoof is seen on some types of English pony. The fine head and ears show that there is Arab in the mix, but I know little of breeds, and less about the names of them.
Most of the ponies I've ridden could have been depicted on a cave wall without looking out of place.
That type of bitless bridle is something I've not seen in use around here - but the local riders tend to be rather more conservative in their tack and dress...

Is that the MacNiel of Barra Tartan?! I have a Great Kilt in that! (also two contemporary kilts, but I digress.) Great to see my clan's tartan like this!

If I had to have a guess I would say that its a Belgian/Ardennnes Draft horse. Napoleon added Arabian bloodlines into the breed which would account for some of its Arabian features it also doesn't have the roman nose of the Shire or Clydesdale! definitely a draft horse of some kind. The bridle would be an americanised hackamore.

I don't know, Grizzly - that draft horse has much heavier bone for a start - look at the power in those legs.
Shame about the tail though.

I see what you mean Anne. The other horse that crossed my mind is. Gypsy vanner I know they are traditionally piebald but they do come in other colours too. That would have the deep stocky body and finer feathered legs, and looking at that mane and tail It could very well be a vanner.
A buckskin Gypsy Vanner

Wish I knew more about the photo. Lady just passed it on and the only link goes back to an online photo album. Was expecting it to be old news with lots of info...alas. Great part is there's a long haired, bearded guy wearing a kilt aboard!
