more & more kilts -- even in Scotland
Just received this from a friend in Markinch, Fife:
"At my wedding (18 months ago in Scotland) there were somewhere in the region of 100 males present at the evening reception. Of these, I would say at least 80 of them were in kilts. Out of these 80, less than 5 had hired their kilt for the evening. (And before you ask, less than half of them were dancers).
I know a number of men who wear a kilt rather than a suit to any formal occasion (in fact, a number of them don't own a suit).
While it might not be as common as wearing trousers, it is certainly not an unusual occurrence to see people doing every day activities in their kilts around my area of Scotland."
:-)

Glad to hear that Martin.
A Kilt is much more exciting to wear than a suit.

Tartan Day ?
The Scottish Executive want to know if the establishing of a 'Tartan Day' would have widespread support among Scots (at home and abroad). Ifyou would like to take part in the survey, there is an online questionaire at: -
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=729771712812
I noticed this in the 'Scottish Snippets' email newsletter and even though the survey is aimed at Scots - I would think that all opinions should count..

Tartan day?
I too have answered the survey
But it sounds as if they want to celebrate a tartan day within Scotland.
That seems rather pointless, unless it is to be just another marketing gimmick;
one question: would a tartan day make you want to visit Scotland at that date ? (approx words).
Scots in Scotland think of tartan either as olf-fashioned rubbish, or something for tourists -- except those that, like ourselves, actually wear it!

It's already been done -- there is a Tartan Day celebration in Angus, Arbroath, to be exact, to honour the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320:

Yep. I've added similar notes to ask why it could not include all of the British Isles for example as many other countries enjoy celebrating it. There are many Scots, and those with links who would appreciate some acknowledgement of the history & culture without having to make a trip to coincide with a specific day.
