Maybe one or two of the seasoned kilters may vaguely remember the first time kilting?

I may be mistaken, but I sense that among some fellow newbies there is a process involved going first-time-public - such as wearing it about the house, taking the dog for a walk-round-the-block-before-the-neigbours-wake-up etc.

Anyway, my very first kilt (hadn't even tried one on) arrived on Thursday, and yesterday I had a great evening out at a party, then on to a couple of bars. I had other plans not compatible with kilt wearing, so I had to wait two loong days.

All you addicts out there whose postings I've been eagerly reading: You are sooo right! Comfortable, receiving loads of attention and compliments, and feeling good Not a single unpleasant episode or comment.

To fellow newbies: don your kilt and get out there - the longer you wait, the longer 'till all those compliments and positive attention.

You're getting there man....once you start seeing all of the tartans and modernized versions you're somehow going to find yourself going to ebay and teh first world you type in will be "kilt" and some how you will have gone without buying more winter appropriate clothing because you want more kilts....but it's so much fun....

I just got several friends into wearing kilts at the Highland Games. One already wears his out though not full time. The other wears his kicking about at home, but hasnt made the journey outside with it except for practice and the Games themselves. He probably wont be allowed to now either, as he and his wife went with me to the swap meet yesterday and she saw all the attention I got kilted. Poor guy, he'll have to sneak it like a highschool girl with makeup.

yes its the first time thats the hardest then it gets easier. I went to the outlets and i think there was a couple of woman laughing behind me but i didnt look. but the other store asscociates smiled. I did purchase a black

My first time was with a rental. My Wife's daughter worked in a costume shop and said that they had a couple of kilts. Well' I just had to check this out. I tried on a couple until I found one that fit. I wore it twice. Once in the ciity halloween parade,( i was the support unit for my wife and her friends. I did not wear it as a costume) and the the nest morning I wore it to church. At the time I was singing in the choir so very few people saw it. But I was hooked. Never before had I been so comfortable in the robe as I was when wearing the killt. Years later I found one on Ebay. I had even gone back to the costume shop, but they had sold the kilts. I look for any reason to wear mine now. Coompany parties to dinner outings. I just canat wear it to work. I get awfully dirty. and lay on the floor alot. But.....
I'm HOOKED.

Good for you! I'm still a newbie. I've worn my UK mocker out only twice. Both times I got a fairly positive response. I figure St. Patricks Day would good be a good time to bring out my Blackwatch kilt and fly plaid. We are having a small dinner party tonight and I asked my wife is she was ok with me wearing a kilt and she was very positive. I think when I can no longer remember how many times I have worn a kilt out in public I will be no longer be a newbie.

I would certainly say that you have graduated. It sounds like you have jumped right in. Congratulations.

I remember the first time I wore a kilt out in public. It was just a trip to a gas station where I pumped my own gas (lots of other people around), and then went in to pay the bill. I was a little timid - didn't know if people would fall over laughing, or just what would happen. The girl at the checkout counter said "I really like your kilt." That was it - people were not laughing or pointing. They would look, and just go about their business. So, I concluded that wearing a kilt out in public was ok. I've been wearing one full-time as my daily attire ever since, and I wear them everywhere.

I enjoy the comfort, the history, the deversified styles that are available. But one of the best things about wearing a kilt; you wind up in conversations with complete strangers who otherwise would not have even given you a second look. It is indeed a powerful garment. Kilt on.

Panache, as a stay at home dad, your options for public wear are kind of limited. I'd start by wearing a kilt every time you go to the store - let people who know you get used to seeing you in them - then go out to dinner with your Red-headed wife a few times. Go somewhere that you know you'll be waiting a few minutes for a table, that way you'll get used to people you don't know looking at you - having your wife along will provide a certain sense of support, and will tell others that it's probably not a cross-dressing thing.

After doing that a few times, you won't even notice people's responses to you any more. Instead, your wife will start laughing at the people you don't notice and will tell you about it afterward.
