Orkney kilts
Can anyone give me background on kilts relating to the Orkney Islands? Colors, styles, or any useful information.
My name-Burgess has been traced back to the Orkney Islands, possibly my own family around 1500's (this is why it strikes my interest).

Kilts & Highland attire in the Orkneys is a relatively recent thing, and mostly found in pipe bands. The Orcadians in general tend to identify more with their Norse heritage.

Hmm, interesting, as my name is descendent from Gunn, I have a smidgeon of orcadian heritage, and I did not know that! I did know that there were many instances of norse heritage thereas well though, and still many ruins left.
There is some scottish heritage in the orkneys though, because they make the most amazing scotch ;)
As far as what the kult scene is like there, who knows, i just know i will be kilted in orkney someday!

The Orkney Islands were under the control of Norway until 1468. They were pledged to James III of Scotland as part of a wedding dowry and were officially annexed by Scotland a couple of years later. All of the island names are of Norse origin.
There is an Orkney tartan. It was registered in 2000 as a fashion tartan. I rather like it.

And what does one do in the dead of winter, when the days are short?... You stay inside and make scotch.

Norway and Scotland, a tale...
In the 1998 football World Cup finals, Scotland played Norway in their second group match, final score 1-1. Bizarrely, Scotland were playing in yellow that day:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k08XK_j0XFg
I watched the match in a gigantic marquee on Glasgow Green with around 3-5,000 other members of the Tartan Army. By kick-off time, 3pm, most attending had been partying and drinking alcohol of one sort or another for 3-4 hours. Then, from one side entrance came two guys in Norway football tops. You could have heard a pin drop.
The crowd parted like the Red Sea as the two lads made their way to one of the many bars. It must have felt like the longest walk, EVER! But, by the time they had gotten only halfway through the masses, some applause broke out, presumably at the thought that they had found the nerve/bottle to enter the fray. By the time they were nearing the bar, the whole place was in uproar, cheering away and patting them both on the back.
Suffice it to say, they never had to pay for a beer or whisky all through the match!

I think unmaking it is much more fun.
