    Question on 5 yard kilt

Hello everyone it's been a while since I have posted but I have been browsing the website occasionally, but just a quick question I seen scotwebs 5 yard casual kilt I was just wondering will I be happy with a 11oz 5 yard kilt or should I save a bit longer and purchase a tank. I'm close to buying a cheap £20 one off ebay, just to get a feel of what it will wear like but don't want to waste my money, what do you all think?

Yes and yes. It all depends where and when you are planning to wear it. A 5 yd light weight casual kilt is great for warm weather, but doesn't really compare to an 8 yd 16 oz kilt. If you are only planning on one go for the real deal. Now picking up a cheap kilt from ebay, if it is your size might be ok, depending on the material and construction, as a trial kilt, or as a pub kilt, however, I'd suggest putting your money towards the real thing.
A few years ago, I purchased an acrylic casual kilt from ebay for about $35. I thought it would be ok for wearing to football games. I wore it once and replaced it with an 8 yd PV kilt. It now sits in the closet.
    Just my 2 cents worth.....

If you buy that cheap ebay kilt, that is what you will have, a cheap kilt. Once you get a better one you will probably never wear it again. I don`t know what your budget is but I would advise at least waiting til you can afford a decent 5 yard PV. That may be all the kilt you will ever want or need, but if you are like most kilties you will long for and eventually acquire an 8 yard wool model. I`m still in the longing stage but in the meantime I am quite happy with my 5 yard PV. So, I guess I pretty much agree with Liam.

I'll be the first one to stick up for the 5 yard heavyweight WOOl kilt. Just put mine back on the hanger and was thinking how much I like it. It's 16 oz HOE tartan and it certainly doesn't have the number of pleats as either of my 8 yard heavyweights but it is pretty nice and comfortable. I've worn it out drinking and worn it with the Argyll jacket for a couple of evening events…looks okay either way. Thus, if you must get something in the 5 yard class, I'd recommend that you hold out, save up a few more $'s and pop for one in 16 ounce wool…more versatility.

I would avoid a lightweight tartan in 5 yard model. Go 16oz heavyweight or possibly 13oz mediumweight

Yes I like that exact thing, nice heavyweight tartan but less yards in the kilt. I have two kilts made with around 6-7 yards and I love them.

They feel more balanced than my 8-yard heavyweight kilts, that have so much weight in the back (especially the 8-yard 18oz MOD kilt).

I do have a 13oz kilt but when I put it on it feels so thin and insubstantial compared to the heavyweight stuff.

Just my opinion, but I started with a tank and now I am taking my time to find other types and weight as alternatives. Certainly not everyone needs a 16 oz 8 yarder. But if you are already thinking about it why not take your time and save up for it. The others seem like such a great deal afterwards

(Just to note I am not knocking other kilts - very happy with the quality of my recent purchase of a casual, yet remain very happy that the tank was already in the wardrobe)

Another important consideration when deciding upon yardage and fabric weight is wrinkling/creasing of the pleats. The heavier the weight and the deeper the pleats the less they will wrinkle. I have a couple of 5 yd wool kilts and I love them, but they require far more attention than my 8 yd kilts.
Don't get me wrong, both are good choices, and I own both, but if I had to pick just one it would be an 8 yd out of 13-16 oz material.
    Cheers

I have a cheap (less than £20) five yard kilt. It's one good feature is that it was cheap! I can wear it about the house, and it doesn't matter if the cats put their claws in it, but I wouldn't wear it out and about. It certainly doesn't have the look, or the feel, of a more expensive one.
