Recent Purchase: "Cheater" Traditional Garter Ties & Brown Hose

    Hi guys,

As some of you may know, I've been on the lookout for traditional garter ties, being too lazy to try and make them for myself. I've found a couple retailers in the U.S. (I'm in Canada) that sell them for about $25/pair, which is reasonable I think. Unfortunately S/H to Canada was about the same - $25. If I was going to place a larger order, buy a few extra things, that wouldn't be a problem. I'm on a budget though, so I couldn't justify spending that much for one pair of garter ties.

I came across this dealer on the Ebay UK site, The Sporting Lodge, who sells British hunting/fishing gear - shooting socks, etc... and found these, what I call "cheater" traditional garter ties. They're 100% wool, doubled over and stitched to form two "danglie bits". See attached photos - the close up of the blue ones is where you can see the stitching. They're sold as an assorted four pack in either modern or muted colours and come with adjustable garters that you attach them to. In my opinion, it's a great deal for $15.68 Canadian for the four pack!

I was also in the market for a pair of brown kilt hose and they also carried these, "Finest Scottish wool shooting socks, made from 80% wool", in "brown tweed". The colour is perfect, it's a touch darker than it appears in the picture. I'm not a big fan of the navy blue heel and toe caps, not very traditional looking I suppose, but I'll be wearing shoes, so who cares. The socks came to about $16 Canadian.

Shipping and handling for the order came in at about $18 Canadian. Not too shabby.

I highly recommend the dealer, they've been in business since 1952!. They've got a great assorted for socks and tweedy bits.

I have a set of 4 of those garter ties also in antique colors. I got them from a different company however. I like them very much. They are a little smaller than regular garter ties, at least mine are, but with these you don't have the roll under your turndown, it tends to lay nice and flat.

Well done I have both sets of garters after reading a recommendation by Chas in this thread http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...discuss-77574/.
I wish they had these in brown, tan, navy, ancient green, mustard ...

Here Here !!! to Sporting Lodge in UK. Ive bought quite a few pair of hunting socks for breeks and kilt wearing. They have always been a good source. I also were the cheaters as well as regular ties. The cheaters work well when I head to the pub or other places.
