    Renaissance Faire

So, I was recently up at bristol renaissance faire in illinois/wisconsin. And my God, you wouldnt believe the number of kilts. Seriously. People in pseudo-renaissance style kilt outfits, people in modern casual tartan kilts, and a boatload of utilikilts. I found it real interesting. I think it's the fact that you can wear pretty much anything you want at the faire and be all the cooler for it, so many gents who perhaps dont have the courage to give it a go in public (which is understandable, if somewhat silly to the lot of us) can be free! Meh, just an interesting little observation. Cheers all!

    Agreed.

The funniest thing that ALWAYS happens, though, is when some guy approaches you in his SportKilt and is a little embarassed. I truly wish that new kilt "wanters" would go to XMarks (or do a web search)and see what's out there as an alternative to those things. They spend $75 to get it, when there are companies out there willing to substantially upgrade the quality for just a few more bucks.

We'll be playing at the Maryland Renn Faire in September, and I GUARANTEE that it will happen there too.

My experience at ren faires...I would much rather see a newby in a utilikit than a renny in a cod-piece (snicker)

I think it's funny the guys wearing the UK who obviously are new to it and a little breeze comes through the trees, and suddenly there hands are down around the kilt making sure it doesn't go anywhere.

Also it is a ren faire, but you are right people just go how they want. Sort of a way to leave reality. The fox tails (when did that get associated with ren faires), and the all black, metal studded goth kids, the fairies, the guy who built a centaur suit. Ummm the other "mythical" creatures whose time frame from the Brothers Grimm don't even come close to the renaissances period. But it's all in fun and jest, so kilt on!

I noticed the same thing when I went to a ren faire a few years ago in Georgia with my neice. However, they all were the traditional tartan kind. No utilikilts.

    GO FIGURE!

I'd been raised in a family that kept the traditions of the olde country. Went to countless highland games. Never even thought about buying and wearing a kilt.

Then 3 years ago I'm at the Ren Faire in Apache Junction, AZ and spot a guy in a caramel Utilikilts workman's. I locked in. I had to have one. I followed him until I could get a good read of the logo on his hindquarters and jotted down the then unfamiliar name.

Went home, got on the Internet, and ordered my first UK...took three months to arrive back then but I was off and running. Ordered a couple of the old gathered style SportKilts to medicate that first long long long jones.

Today, I own 55 kilts - and I think about 8 of them are hand sewn traditional wool kilts....I wear kilts full time...and my kilt addiction is flourishing....All because a guy wore a caramel UK workman's to a Ren Faire and I spotted it.

    Wonder who that guy was?

Anyhow, seems to me that in my case at least - any kilt exposure is good. You never know who's gonna get hooked by the kilts we wear.

I've wanted to wear a kilt for a long time. Not really sure why,but the desire was there. It was at a local Ren faire that I saw a utilikilt for the first time. I never knew there was such a thing as a modern kilt. It was then that I actually started pursuing the dream of owning and wearing a kilt. It took several years for the money, desire, and self confidence to all gather together, but it did finally!! Now, I own 4. Full time kilting is still a long way off for me, but I have a great start!

If it wasn't for Ren faires (and I am a faithful faire goer), I would still be in that *gee, wouldn't a kilt be kinda fun to wear?* mode.

PS, at our local faire, I would have to say that the modern kilts versus the traditional kilts would be about 50/50. Last year, I would almost give the traditional kilts the edge on numbers.

It's nice to see one of my son's old threads resurrected. For a moment I thought he was active again.
