Style of Jacket? Help Needed to ID.

    Hi guys,

I came across this tweed jacket on Ebay, listed as a kilt jacket. Can someone identify what style it is, if it is in fact a kilt jacket? Would it be considered a "crail" jacket since it only has one button on each cuff? It has no epaulets and has a two button front closure. Would this be considered a modern take on a classic?

    Thanks in advance.

    I'd say it's a tweed crail and it's totally a kilt jacket

If you look at the placement of the pockets and the curvature of the sporran cut-away I think you can see that this is probably a conversion of a sport coat into a kilt coat.

Be aware that the designations "Crail" "Argyll" and "Braemar" in referencing various cuff styles are not set in stone and might vary from maker to maker.

For example House Of Edgar calls the plain-cuff jacket the "Argyll", the gauntlet-cuff jacket the "Braemar", and the slash-cuff jacket the "Crail"

Perhaps best stick to "plain cuff", "gauntlet cuff", and "slash cuff" (or "Prince Charlie cuff" as HOE calls it).

The only thing that makes me question this theory is the front buttonholes. A Saxon jacket would surely have had a third buttonhole and, best as I can see in the photo, it would have been present "above the curve" or intersecting with the cut-away. No sign of reweaving/repair at that point.

Again, this is all based on a small photo so I could well be wrong -- but something to look at, if OP's copy of the photo is larger/can be scaled up.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the input. I was thinking that it might have been a sport coat conversion as well, but I'm no expert. Here's another picture, this one of the label. Not sure if this lends any credence to the fact that it may be a genuine kilt jacket or not. Anyone recognize the maker?
