Sporran Closures

    Sporran Closures
The semi-dress and the casual sporrans that I have both use a button-snap closure that I hate. I can never get the snap closed unless the sporran is full.

I've seen some discussion about magnetic closures, but I wonder about a magnetic field that close to my credit cards. Has anyone had a bad experience with this?

Another option is velcro, but it isn't my favorite material either.

I know there are other sporrans out there with a loop and button combination. I just bought a small belt pouch at a Ren Fair like event. I'm thinking of using it as a model for a self-made sporran. I've done some leather carving and stamping in the past and I think I could handle a celtic design.

Has anyone tried to convert a button-snap closure to something better?

I have several sporrans with magnetic closures and have never had any problems. I remember seeing a post somewhere (I can't find it, it may have been on another site) where someone tested this and the magnet didn't damage the cards. If your worried about this use your wifes credit card as a guinea pig. :D

I wouldn't worry about it at all. I think it takes a much stronger magnet to damage the strip on a credit card. I have a very slim "front pocket" wallet with a magnetic clip to hold bills, and have never had a problem with my cards.

The only precaution I'd take with the magnetic closures is to put a piece of leather or some other lining material over the hardware that's inside the pouch...I have a Buzz Kidder witht the mag closer and I keep catching my fingernail on the mounting plate when I put my hand into the sporran. Hasn't de-maged any credit cards yet.

I've been using a Buzz Kidder sporran with a magnetic catch for about a year and it hasn't damaged my debit or credit cards.

I had the same worry about the credit cards. But, I didn't really think they were in much danger. I guess small electronics (PDA, Ipod) would be safe too?? Anyone tote any of those things in their magnetic closure sporran?

Danged if I don't like the zippers on the SWK Ballistic Nylon sporran...think they call it nightstalker or something for some reason.

I fiddled and fumbled with the magnets and drawstrings and various sporran closure gee gaws...zippers just come naturally to this olde bird...

Know zippers aren't fun/possible with leather, but if someone ever makes a zipper style in leather they're gonna sell a lot of them...heck, if SWK would have their source make up a brown ballistic nylon sporran it would sell well too.

Zippers be best for me though.

The only way the sporran will kill your credit card is by opening to let you pay for the next kilt.
Tom I had the same problem with the push studs. Here's a design I came up with on the sporran I made a while back. It's silver and ebony but any workable metal should do. It's quite weighted and never comes open when i don't want it too and is very easy to open when I do.

Ditto to both: I kept running the mounting plate beneath my fingernail (OUCH!!) until I taped it. AND I've had zero trouble with the cards and I've had two sporrans with magnetic closures for more than a year.

I was watching "Mythbusters" (a TV show on Discovery Channel) and they tested the magnetic band on a credit card. A small magnet on a sporran will definitely not wipe a credit card. It takes a very, very, strong magnet to even disrupt the information on a credit card.

I have the same problem with snap closures. I say, if you can get a magnet, go for it!
