Is it inappropriate to be kilted at Midnight Mass Christmas eve?

I will be singing in the choir loft with my choir. We won't be down front, so the concern about being a distraction or an attention hog really doesn't fly.

If you think it's okay, what would one wear if one didn't have an Argylle? I do have a PC and waistcoat, but is that too formal? Blue blazer, shirt and tie, maybe?

My question would be as you are part of the choir, what is the rest of the choir wearing? Then I would match the formality, or lack of, with the rest of the choir.

I would not go with a regular blue blazer; the cut would be too long to wear with a kilt.

The choir will just be in, well, church clothes. Jackets, ties, slacks. If not a jacket and ties, a button-down and sweater.

So rather than a sportsjacket, maybe just a sweater and buttondown with the kilt?

A nice shirt and tie, or sweater, would look fine and sounds like it would fit your description of the other choristers. I sing in two choirs kilted, as long as my "level" of dress is similar it works out fine. An added bonus, especially if your service is long, is that kilts make great pew padding!

Church is only place besides work where I am not kilted. The reason I have chosen not to be kilted at church is that I think it could be a distraction. However I am starting to rethink my thinking. At first it would be a distraction. But after awahile I think people would simply see it as the normal way I dress.

I hate to sugar coat this but, from the waist up, dress like all the other choristers.

Well if there is no choir prescribed dress code, just look nice and do what you want. :)

I wear a kilt to church all the time (nearly everywhere else too). It was a distraction for a couple of weeks. Now if I show up in trousers, everyone wants to know why ?

As long as a sweater is appropriate, then don't be afraid of wearing one. They can look quite smart with the kilt.

Exactly. Nice shirt, tie, and sweater always looks good with the kilt!!!
