    Nice Skirt!
Had my first negative comment on Friday evening, in the Bytowne Market, which draws some of the wierdest people in Ottawa. The "nice skirt" threw me and all I could answer, in that split second, was, thank you. Interestingly, it came from a obese woman in exremely ill fitting jeans.

From the look on her face, I don't think she expected that answer.

That is the human nature. She was just looking to provoke you somehow. Strangely, I am so used to the Skirt comments, I don't react much to it any more. However, it is my wife who will tell them off.

I also get "nice skirt" every once in a while. I also give the "thank you" reply. Some times if the person in close enough I say "it's a kilt but thank you anyway".
Life will go even what others think.

I bet a kilt'd look really sharp up in the market. I've spent more time hanging around there than I'd care to admit, and I'm betting that the lady was a tourist.
As for the denizens, they get to see the midday parade all the time in the summer. Everyone's just GOT to know what a kilt is.

Depending on the circumstances my response is anything from ignoring the comment to a commentary on the lack of proper education in the Public School system!

If I took 10 'skirt' comments there were probably 6 that really didn't know what it was (or ever seen one) or could not remember, 2 that were joking and 2 that were really given as a dig. It is interesting that the 'skirt' dig comments were made by someone that is with someone else. It was an attempt to make them look 'big'. Usually a good comeback or ignoring complete is enought to p**s them off and make me feel good.

It is iinteresting to note that the guys ( or even girls) with the multiple rings, strange color hair or 'superglued' hair are usually the ones that think it's cool and ask guestions.

Well Richard, they aren't the normal run of conformist lemmings either so it isn't too surprising they think the kilt is cool. What I enjoy is they like seeing some of us older folks tossing over the conformist silliness along with them.

These people think they are being witty and clever so I try to reply with something equally witty and clever. I try to determine the most prominant feature of the person making the comment and return with "Nice _____". Could be overweight, bad teeth, bad breath, hair, etc. They won't expect it.

The comments that stump me every once in a while are the ones that come with a scottish burr. I'm never quite sure how to take them if it's done well.

I also go back to one of my previous responses to someone.

"And I'm suppose to take fashion advice from you? (hahaha)"

What gets me is they all think that they are original with the retort and that we are supposed to respond in someway to engage in "discussion". I always like surprising them with my response or lack of one. You did well Casey - caught her off guard.

I got the comment this morning "aren't you cold in that quilt?"

It reminded my of that cartoon of the couple in bed with a kilt spread over them, she says to him "I said buy a QUILT not a kilt".
