They weight around 1.5 pounds
cost:
cowhide for front around $45.00
wool for padding $20.00
elk hide on back $45.00
brass tacks $15.00/500
hardware &plywood $20.00
leather dye $3.00

TOTAL about $148.00
A lot of the stuff I have on hand and I use the left over leather for other projects so an exact cost is hard to figure

I love copper rivets. I make medieval armor and i use them all the time. They hold up really well. The armor I make has to be battle ready since it actually gets used, and pop rivets or plugs just wouldn't work. For show though, they look great.

Ya went and did it again!

It's obvious that you put in a lot of time and care in the construction and planning of your targes...STOP!

You're making the ones I build look like knocked together hunks of crap :-)

But seriously.......you have constructed an object of beauty and I really admire your level of craftsmanship!

Currently I am constructing some targe "blanks" for my reenactment group and spent $80 on enough thick bull hide to construct 4 targes and still have plenty of skin left over.

You might want to call around the different leather stores in your area and ask them about any sales they might be having.

I also use whatever to pad the back, most recently it has been the stuffing from an old 19th century chair which is mainly straw and raw cotton fiber.

I saw a Targe similar to that one at a cutlery shop in the nearby mall, but yours looks more finely crafted.

About joining my group:

You should know that you're more than welcome to join up and participate in our functions with the rest of us.
Port Angeles is quite a long ways from Portland, and it's about 1 hr. farther to McMinnville where our workshop and base of operations is.

If you're in the area in January, you might want to plan on attending our Burns dinner on the 19th.......we're already planning quite the extravaganza!
