I'm over in Las Vegas, NV. out and about yesterday on the strip yesterday (Arizona tartan). Only comments I got were about my Z Coil shoes...repeated questions about the spring shoes. Save one very intoxicated woman who came up to me and literally pressed her charms against my arm and breathed fire in my face asking where SHE could get a kilt like that. I told her, but I'm quite sure she'll have no recollection tomorrow.

Its still weird to see people approaching, gear up for a kilt comment, and get a shoe question...

Out and about kilted in Cali...
I went out kilted for the first time since we've lived here in Monterey yesterday. I didn't seem to get as many stares as usual when I was up in Northern NY. I heard one woman or girls...didn't turn to see who it was...proclaim "Is that guy wearing a kilt? Yes...THAT'S AWESOME!!!"...So apparently I made somebody's day. I was busy in trying to get my vehicle pulled up to the front door of Bestbuy at the moment to get something loaded into the back, otherwise I might have had the opportunity to strike up a great conversation with a beautiful (or at least that's how I picture her...) woman. Ah well...

Also got a very friendly smile from the lady standing behind us in line at the customer service desk too.

I really hadn't thought about it before, but yes -- I've received far more notice and comments when wearing tartan kilts than solid-color ones, though in both cases the comments I do get are almost all enthusiastically positive.

Yesterday (Christmas Eve) I was out with a lady friend of some 25 years in Berkeley for a movie and dinner, since my SO is in Seattle visiting family for Christmas 'til Sunday morning; and I decided to try "kilting for the season".

Chose my Stillwater Leatherneck for its green, red, gold, and blue colors, with a green chamois shirt from L.L. Bean. Added navy hose with red garter ties, navy lambswool v-neck sweater-vest, dark-blue Ryan Ross bonnet; and black dress shoes, black FB "Duin Uasal" sporran, and black lambskin Stillwater kilt-cut jacket. (Oh, and my Rab Gordon sgian dubh.)

The ensemble was definitely a "hit" everywhere we went. In line for tickets at the movie theater one guy who was there with his boyfriend asked, in what sounded like a British accent, if this is what Scots wear for Christmas -- he clearly "got" the "seasonal theme" concept. I was about to answer that it's what former Marines who like kilts wear, but my companion jumped in with "It's what HE wears for Christmas!" :D

I don't have any 'contemporary' kilts, but I think this is a pretty accurate assessment.

To stay on the topic, I have noticed the same thing while wearing Black Watch after dark at the zoo during the "Lights before Christmas" event. Since the majority of the lighting is in the trees, ground level was fairly dark and I'm sure that the tartan was nearly all black to those who did see me.

My Edzell might have been a better choice as it is a lighter color than either Black Watch or National Fallen Firefighter Foundation (NFFF) tartans. for reference, NFFF is black based while Rocky's (USA Kilts) Firefighters Memorial is red based.

Only two gents approached me about my kilt; both were interested as to where I had purchased it.

(I joke; my brother is an LCDR and I'm a veteran Marine, so you can see how family gatherings go!)

Neither do I...and I had to make a stop yesterday to pick up a couple last minute items on the way to the family gathering while wearing my tartan kilt (Macdonell of Keppoch), and though the store was jam packed with people, and the stares were obvious, not one comment made.

Some were obviously quite uncomfortable standing near a kilted gentleman too....go figure! :?

    Cool kilt.
It has been my experience also that a traditional tartan kilt draws much more attention than a contemporary kilt, even in Scotland.

A few weeks ago, while Christmas shopping, I was at a mall on the way back home from Ikea, and it seems most of the reactions were at a distance. I was in my OD Green UK Original, and probably a dozen times, I noticed a little kid point at me, and ask their parent (usually boys and their dads) something, presumably "why's he in a skirt?"
