Before I ordered my first kilt, I purchased a balmoral bonnet and a tartan tie (Robertson Hunting), and I still wear it often with a sport coat.

I own a tartan tie. But when I wear it with a kilt, I always wear a waistcoat to break up the tartan, as it were.

I have two tartan ties: one wool tie (Gordon); one silk tie (Dress Gordon). I wear them quite often, but not with my kilt.

While I don't personally own any tartan ties, I would wear one with a suit or with a blazer and pants (even though I only own 3 pairs of pants and 2 are jeans), but would not wear one with a kilt.

With my kilts, I wear solid color ties that pull out a color in the kilt. I try (if possible) to match the tie to my hose as it 'balances' the outfit top to bottom.

However if I wear one with a kilt then I wear a waistcoat to break up having the two right next to each other.

That's my thought, also. Or I'll wear two variants of the same tartan- MacLoed dress kilt and MacLoed hunting tie, for example. Also, I really like wearing tartan accessories with solid kilts. I wear MacLeod dress tie and flashes with my green Flamingo kilt.

I do the same thing some times- forest green hose and tie really make the Colorado state tartan pop.

Like most others, I think they're great with a suit, or in shirt and tie format.

With a kilt, I'm not a fan; never worn one that way.

...I guess it might look ok with a solid color tweed kilt, provided you had the right tweed and tartan to work with. Not really sure.

Not with a kilt - they can look good but I'm not a fan of wool material for ties, for me too rough and "frictional" !

Tartan ties with a kilt strike me as poorly as tartan flashes. It always reminds of people who are over color-coordinated. You know what I mean, that one girl in pink from head to toe, and everyone just wonders why she doesn't break it up a bit. If you really love your tartan that much, then I won't fault you being enthusiastic. I just think you should save the tie for some time when it's really going to pop against an otherwise bland outfit.

They can be had in silk, too, which is quite nice.

Speaking of which, Beau Ties, Ltd. is offering Lindsay, Malcolm, and Scrymgeour along with their existing tartans.
