Who knew?
Okay, I finally have an experience I think is worth sharing. Hopefully, it will brighten your day.
A little background though: The first time kilted at work was VERY scary as I didn't know how some of my co-workers would react. I live in a very consertive area of the country (Bible belt). I had warned my boss, employees and some co-workers but we are a fairly large organization. I knew there were a few who would probably try to say I wasn't compliant with the dress code, etc. (In every organization there are alweays a few who like to stir things up.) Well the first time went very well. The second time even better and yesterday was the third time I've gone to my job kilted.
Here is what really threw me for a loop. I entered the break room and who just happened to be in there eating lunch? Why it was our area VP. I thought I was dead for sure, my director would get an e-mail from HR stating that "Extremes in personal dress or grooming are not tolerated.... yadda yadda yadda". As soon as he saw me his eyes got as big as saucers. Realizing there was no going back I spread my armes and said. "So wadda ya think?" His response... "I like it! In fact I've got a couple myself."
You could have knocked me over with a feather. I went through the rest of the day with a huge smile on my face and no calls from HR to my director. It just goes to show life is full of surprises.
Keep the faith!

Sometimes life truly is "like a box of chocolates". Almost like an "in your dreams" story come true! 8)

That is pure joy to hear. It is amazing that those who we think are going to give us grief for being ourselves, actually are the biggest supporters. (B)

You are a true braveheart, 80's. As I've said before, being kilted in the workplace (for those who can) is truly a big challenge.
well done! Now you're happy and free!

Wonderful Story!
The Ol' Coyote is alive and well and sometimes he gives us nice surprises.
One thing about large companies, they are often under the gun to prove to some government agency that they practice cultural diversity. What better proof than a kilted employee on the job. Win-Win situation.

heh. I'm tempted to apply for a job at WalMart in a kilt.

Good thought Bubba.
I've pretty much resolved that if I ever interview for another agency I'll interview kilted. Would just solve so many silly situations up front to be hired kilted.
Face it, if the agency had an issue with it I wouldn't want to work there anyway.

I think there are already of couple of kilted guys at WalMart. One is on the UK website under "Kilted At Work".

I was waiting for you to respond "So when are you going to wear them to the office?"
But even without that, it's a great story. I work for a big org, too, and sometimes get some flak from underlings but management has been supportive of me.
We did have a videoconference a couple of weeks ago, on a global level, and there was some director of muckity-muck in our London office that started talking and as soon as we picked up on the thick Scottish accent, everyone in the room turns and looks at me grinning from ear to ear and those adjacent to me start elbowing me. When the speaker asked if there were any questions, everyone starts looking at me again. When I get room later, people start telling me they were waiting for me to ask him if he was wearing his kilt (though it was a video conference, we could only see from the sternum-up). I think I said something like "Ahh we're in the mood for stereotyping today, aren't we?" and sort of left it at that.
There are people who talk a lot now about buying a kilt because of me but they still won't get off their duffs and actually do it. One fellow bought one but very rarely wears it and never at work or around co-workers outside of work.

In my neck of the woods nobody else wears kilts. I've heard of a couple guys that have worn them in public on very rare occasion but I've never seen them.

Excellent story.
When the director of the University Libraries (who's Irish) spotted my Black Watch kilt I got a big smile and a couple of great comments from him. THAT squashed the possibility of anything filtering down from on-high.
