    Gatlinburg Games '09
Just seeing who among the rabble will be attending the Gatlinburg Games this year? They will be May 15-17th this year, and the music this year looks pretty good. Anyone want to plan a meet-up?

This may be the year I finally make it over to Gburg. Barclay has been pestering me about going for several years now...

I will be there hosting a tent for Clan Barclay. Make sure you all discuss this at your East TN kilt night this Saturday. If you can be there for the parade Friday night, you will be more than welcome to march with me.

As long as work does not get in the way, then I'll be there. I do not believe it is all that far from Clarksville. I think it 2 or 3 hours away, I can do that no problem. Unfortunately, I will not be kilted, as I purchased my kilts while in the Army and suffice to say they no longer fit. I just tried one on about a month ago and it was not good. I think it is about time I purchased a new one anyway.

Thanks for the thumbs up on the music this year. It is the first time Celtic Force has partnered with Gatlinburg to provide the entertainment. With Colin Grant Adams, Coyote Run, Rathkeltair & Cutthroat Shamrock sharing the stage there will be no lack of quality music on site.

Above is the website for the games. I've only been once, but it is a good one. Just a warning to those who have never been. If it rains, bring some shoes you don't mind getting muddy. The events take place on a highschools practice field. And the type of soil lends itself to ankle deep mud.

    Count us in!
That's the anniversary weekend for us, and we've already made plans to rent a nice room somewhere, and be there for the games! It would be great to have an official time for us all to meet up.

Aye. Ghillies are a poor choice! LOL Also, get there early - parking at the school is at a premium, otherwise they are great venue, small but lots of fun! It's also the only place that I've seen not one, but two, cabers crack and break because of the poor, muddy footing....that was the year you and KiltedCodeWarrior were there, wasn't it Heath?

For some reason, I am really looking forward to Gatlinburg this year.

Yup, that was the one and only year I was there. I think there is more parking at the back entrance, its just not as well known. Or is that where the vendors and clan tent folks park. I'm going to have to plan out a route for the drive from the cabin to the school. Although, early in the morning the traffic may not be so bad between PF and G'burg. I'll be coming from Wears Valley Rd.

I'm looking forward to the mountain stroll (kilted hike) on Friday morning. Plus the parade.

I plan to be there...probably Saturday at the earliest, though. I'll be the one with the sad, "kilt-envy" face on...:(

Hey I was competing that year and was on the field when both cabers were broken-by the same man!!!
It was so muddy the weights and hammer would just disappear into the ground when they landed.
We had a lot of fun that day!

One of the first years I attended, it was a nice, sunny day, and someone joked that the sun was the cause for a smaller turnout, as Scots just don't feel at home unless it's cold and rainy!!

How do you break a caber? I'd think hard ground would be worse on them than soft ground.

The first one hit the ground while standing up straight and that cracked it, then it fell over and when it hit lengthwise that finished it off.
When Mike fell with the 2nd one, (yes the same man broke them both) he tried to lay it over but again it hit pretty hard horizontally and bounced, cracking it as well. I think that one split lengthwise from end to end.

We made him wait and go last after that. :D

It wasn't so much a matter of the ground being hard or soft as much as the forces involved in the sudden stop and the nice whipping action when it bounced. He was really lucky he didn't get hurt either time because live cabers are known for attacking when given the chance.

    Bump...Less than a month away!
We're less than a month away from the Gatlinburg games. I'll be in Gatlinburg/PF Thursday through Monday. I plan on attending the mountain stroll and parade on Friday and then hosting the Barclay tent both Saturday and Sunday.

There was mention of having a kilt night in G'burg that weekend. I've been there a million times, but I have no clue as to what would fit for a kilt night. If its going to be Saturday night, or those of us who work clan tents, by the end of the day, we are usually beat. So something in G'burg would be best.

You can use my tent as a gathering point. As for a meeting time, I would suggest after the opening ceremonies at noon but before the massed bands at 2PM. This would be Saturday.

We could also meet for one of Matt's seminars. I don't know what times those will be. Maybe Matt knows. I think he gives one on Saturday and one on Sunday.

    So who's coming?

My lovely wife and I will be there, most definitely!! We're coming to Gatlinburg that Friday night sometime, and will be there Sat. and Sunday for the games. There are a great many places to hold a kilt night there in Gatlinburg. The Fox and Parrot pub is one, and the Smoky Mountain Brewery is another. Should someone call and set up at reservation?? ( I volunteer to do so if we can get a head count, perhaps once there at the Games.)

Dirk: Will there be a clan Skene (or Robertson) tent there??

Skene or Robertson is not listed on their website. But it may just not be updated. Wow, just two weeks away. It looks like we will be having some folks who are doing a bit of traveling.

I suggested earlier the use of the Barclay tent for a meeting place. And for a specific time, I would suggest right after the opening ceremonies, which kick off at noon. If anyone has other suggestions, please speak up.

Who else is coming? I think TKW needs a general idea to warn the pub. He volunteered (pun intended) himself for that duty.

    Weather Forecast
OK folks, the games are this weekend. I checked the forecast on weather.com and it calls for scattered t-storms Thursday thru Sunday. Hopefully the "scattered" means it will rain elsewhere in Gatlinburg and not at the High School. But the odds are likely against us. So be prepaired for mud and lots of it. I've said it before, but this is mud like no other, very sticky stuff. So not a weekend to be picky on footware. Also highs are in the mid to upper 70's.

YES! This weekend! Here we come! We'll be there Saturday and Sunday, and I'm planning on being at the whisky tasting as well Friday afternoon. See you at Clan Barclay after the opening ceremonies! Anyone know when Mr. Newsome is planning on speaking?

There are other things in the fire for right now but I'm trying to get them wrapped up so I can get there. Hopefully I can get it all done.

If you are going to be at the parade, you are more than welcome to march with us. I invite all xmarkers to march with Clan Barclay.

Jolly St Nick, I hope you are able to make it. I have a list for you :)

It appears that wellies (or perhaps chest waders) will be in order for tomorrow. I hope to make it up, but the schedule is still uncertain.
