    Providing fabric to kiltmaker

I was just wondering if you thought this scenario would be in poor taste.

Let's say that one was able to buy an 8 yd. tartan remnant for MUCH less than retail - saving a little money on fabric.

This individual, however, would insist on full payment for labor and time....

Is it inappropriate to try to find a kiltmaker that would construct it for you?

Nope, not at all. Some will be happy to make it for you.

When I was at USAKilts and we didn't have the material, or the customer had a family tartan on-hand, we would GLADLY make the kilts. It was as simple as deducting the material cost from the final product.

I can't think of ONE kiltmaker that I know that wouldn't do that! I just finished a couple kilts from supplied tartan. I don't charge anything (since I can't) so the task is done as a labor of love for the craft. You can't make hundreds of kilts and just stop!

Pick the style of kilt that you REALLY want, and do the homework. If I were in YOUR shoes, I might even PM Barb to see if she's available! (HINT, HINT)

Unfortunately, I am still waiting to hear if the tartan is still available, but if it is, I am definitely buying it.

    Barb crossed my mind, too....

    Hi BBQ

I don't think it's tacky at all to bring fabric to a kiltmaker, and lots of kiltmakers feel the same way (provided the material is something that the kiltmaker feels will make a good kilt!). Someone just brought me enough tartan for 4 kilts, and I'm happy to make the kilts for them. I figure I'm not in the kiltmaking business to make money from ordering tartan for someone.

Some kiltmakers even flat out refuse to order tartan and ask the customer to provide the tartan. I'm not much on that, because I can typically get tartan cheaper than a customer can. But, if a customer can get it cheaper, it's fine with me (particularly now that the US$ stinks so badly against the British pound!!).

I might be interested, depending on the time frame...

    Cheers,

    Barb

Well, I found out that the remnant was no longer available..... so, no tartan....

I did just receive some poly/wool that I will use to construct a kilt myself, using Barb's book.

I haven't opened the package yet, I might work on my Stillwater kilt that doesn't fit well first.

Alas, the wool kilt still eludes me....
