What the UK Spartan might have been

When the Spartan was first mentioned here, I thought the material was going to be like the shorts at this link:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...312696221&rd=1

I have a pair of the this type of shorts that have lasted for probably close to 15 years and are still in great shape. I think the weight of the material would be awesome for a kilt and the material moves and drapes great. A bonus to this is it could be reversable if you can coordinate the stitching color.

You can buy the shorts at walmart so I'm toying with the idea of buying two XXXL sets and trying to sow them together for pleating. Any thoughts?

A couple of issues with this idea have been brought to my attention that some may like to hear.

The weight of the material is about 6 oz. single ply. To make it double ply like the actual shorts would bring the weight to 12 oz. but to do this we have to deal with the next two issues.

The material is stretchy which is why it is perfect for athletic shorts.

The material will slip easily when rubbed across itself, another positive for athletic shorts.

I don't know if pining the heck oout of the cloth before sewing would help with any of these issues.

One great positive with this material is that it does not require ironing. I've wadded up my shorts and stuffed them in a backpack for days , pulled them out and not a wrinkle in sight. These are no maintenance shorts.

I regret having to say this, Cavscout (and others who just love the UK Spartan), but both these shorts and the UK Spartan remind me of some strange, undefinable undergarment that my grandmother, and other ladies of her era, used to wear .................... not that I ever saw her wearing them, but they appeared on the washing lines with regularity. They were not, I grant you, in such bright colours. Those favoured by my dear grandmother seemed always to be in a pinkish grey shade called 'Oyster'!!

This is the one Utilikilt design that I know I could never wear!

Thank you for your wisdom and common sense Hamish...

And after reading that, I would have to agree.

I tend to agree with you Hamish on the spartan. It looks too silky for me. I think the mesh material I'm looking at has a more athletic look and feel. But as always it is not for everyone.

For someone who works out regularly and vigorously, I can see the Spartan being a very comfortable alternative. I personally can't wear kilts to work out, it's just not very comfortable for me. But I can see doing it in a Spartan. I agree that the fabric is too flashy looking, but a more muted fabric of a jersey-mesh type would be much better.

I tried on the Spartan on Sunday and absolutely love it. I don't see it as something I would wear out all that often, but for lounging around the house or washing the car, it will be terrific. I would have bought one on the spot, but I'm holding out for the second generation.

Hamish, I know exactly what you're talking about, but for the younger generation accross the pond... Well we see them differently.

CavScout, I'll bring up your suggestion at the Aniversary gathering on Saturday, see what Steven has to say about the idea. I'm not sure how they would do it with the pleats, but reversable might be interesting. I have a pair of pants (yeah, I know guys) that are made out of that material, and they are awefully comfortable.

I'm looking at a few bolts of this stuff on ebay and trying to find out what the weight is but it's like she hasn't a clue what I mean. She's going to weigh the entire bolt tomorrow soooooo...

Hopefully this is 6 oz. material so I can 2 ply the kilt to make 12 oz.

Correct me if I'm wrong in my logic here in calculating what the bolt should weigh if it's 6 oz / sq. yd. The bolt is 60" wide x 10 yds

1 yd 60" wide would be 24 oz.

    times

    10 yds

equals 240 oz. for the bolt

converted to lbs. = about 15 lbs.

    Does that sound right?

I figure a bolt is enough to make 2 kilts at 5 yds each. The material will cost about $16.00 US. Maybe this is a waste of time, but 2 sturdy comfy kilts for $16.00 sounds worth a shot !!!!

Thanks Geoduck, let me know if they like the idea.

I did see one live and in person on this poor soul,

    I agree with Hamish.
