Kilts for the (really) big men.

The "Celtic Crippler" gimmick is going over great at the fed I wrestle for- so well in fact that my promoter wants in on it. He wants to tag me with an old friend of mine, put us both in kilts, and manage us- himself in a kilt. This doesn't bother me in the least, but I am a tad concerned as to where exactly he'll find an inexpensive kilt for wrestling wear. See, he's a big guy- last I heard he floats around the 450 pound mark. He wears the weight pretty well, but most places aren't exactly going to carry his size.

USAKilts has a price listed for their casual kilts for size 56" and above- but I wonder just how "above" you can go while sticking to that price. So far, that's the best option I know to give him. A handmade 700 dollar custom kilt is a bit out of the question for financial reasons, as well as the fact that he needs it pretty soon and won't want to be wearing a treasure like that in places where it'll almost certainly get beat all to heck and have various iffy substances splattered on it.

For myself and my partner, we may stick to Sportkilts or Stillwaters, as both have served me very well- but from all the good things I've heard about Rocky and USAKilts, we may go that route too. Depends on how much he's willing to spend, as we'd probably get matching tartans.

Any suggestions or experience in this matter? He needs a first time wearer's kilt, essentially- a sportkilt, Stillwater, or USA casual sort of thing. Who should I direct him towards?

    Well! I'm flabbergasted!
This is wonderful news. The USAK casual is your best bet on getting a "tent" sized wrestling kilt for your partner; at least as far as I know.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Maybe King Kilts. Kilts for big guys and guys of all sizes, they say. Not outrageously expensive.

When in doubt, contact the vendors directly. If stillwater doesn't have the right size in stock, I doubt Jerry will be able to do much for you, as I believe it's pretty much limited to what is on hand.

Sportkilt however seems more likely to work with you, as they do some custom work. I would think that this would not be the first time someone was too small for their standard sizes, given that they specialize in kilts for highland games and the like. The worst they can do is say no.

I can't speak to either the quality or customer service of USA kilts, though I've heard noting but good things.

The only other one I can think of that seems ready to handle big guys without diving into the realm of >$200 kilts is the celtic croft. I know some of their kilts go for under a hundred, and with box pleats they'll make some ginormous kilts without greatly increasing the price. Although, that's just from perusing their website, I have no personal experience dealing with them or their products.

    Cassidy,
You can't go wrong with USA Kilts. Rocky and Kelly can probably get your friend the kilt he needs in the fastest time (Rush fee) and one that will take a lot of abuse (Poly-Viscous). I think for wrestling, the casual kilt (Velcro closure) would probably be the best. I am sure that Rocky and company can sew one together that will fit a man of substance.

I have some USAK semi-traditional kilts that are abused every day - and don't show any sign of giving up.

Based off your suggestions, I've e-mailed both Rocky and Seamus tonight, and updated my friend on his options. Tomorrow I should have a few responses, and I'll keep you posted on how it goes down- along with pictures of Hurricane in his first ever kilt when it happens. Who knows, maybe he'll one day be a kiltie outside the world of pro wrestling, and maybe an x-marker to boot!

Rocky has made two kilts for me that have been perfectly built to my size and I am a lot larger than average. He can do it for you ... and they hold up great.
