"Great Kilts"
Hello everyone!
I'm new to the board, and from poking around, it seems most of the topics are all about modern kilts. They look wonderful by the way!
I'm curious though. Does anyone wear a "great kilt" style kilt for any reason? The double wide, pleat it every time, pin it with a brooch, belted plaid kind of kilt?
I'd love to see some pictures of some of the men on here and kilts of this style.
If that's not really something that is prevalent on this board, that's fine too, just curious!

Check this website- www.renscots.org. I'm not pictured on there yet, as I'm too new, but there are some excellent pictures of great kilts on there. Welcome to the board, by the way.

Rome-Greetings:
Yes, you will see an occasional Great Kilt, now and then, but sadly, it is rare. The Victorian mish mash great kilt with the pin on fly, seems to be the rage.
In my case, I wear the Traditional (Unstructured) kilt, and the Great Kilt on occasions. But then, bear in mind, I am also a member of an Historical Re-enactment Unit, the 74th Highlanders(see the website).
The Great Kilt is good for a cold day, or a truly formal outing. But it takes patience, practice, some plain cussing(and some Money to buy the fabrick) to wear it correctly; otherwise, it looks like you got dressed with a hayfork in a hurricane!
My thought: go with the Wee Kilt, traditional style, to begin with; then do the homework, and move up to the Great Kilt. Even if you wear it 3 times a year, the rest of the time it is a fine blanket!
I prefer the Traditonal kilt, in wool ; it looks less like an item of female attire, the modern ones have the buckles, the overworked sewing(the back pleats are vaguely obsecene, waving over your a**, I.M.H.O.) and ect.
But- please do the research into any kilt you buy and use-First; it will save you heartache, money, time & friends!
If I or the Community can be of further assistance(and there are some Very Good Members out there, with a bookshelf 's worth of knowledge in their heads- who can shewe the way) please Post them here for all to see.

Welcome aboard. You'll find this to be a very nice place, even though few folks wear the great kilt.
Whenever I want to really show out, I wear one myself. It's in the Red Dress Robertson tartan while I wear more muted colors at all other times. You can't tell much about the kilt since my wife takes a terrible photo, but here is a picture from a few years back.

I had on a doublet with lace and a purple stone in the brooch. It's the worst possible angle for the shot, but it really looks good when you get all gussied up like that.
I rarely wear it at other times because I'm not a reenactor and I don't want it to be taken for a costume . . . unless it's Halloween and my face is painted blue on one side. Then I strap a two-handed claymore to my back and go for it.

Welcome to Xmarks. I think the general opinion is that the great kilt is mostly worn for festivities, holidays, etc whereas the 'modern' (or as some call traditional) kilt is more formal and more conventional for day to day wear. But all type of kilters and kilts are welcome, one and all, as well as their opinions. I love seeing people prove convention wrong, even (and maybe especially) when it's my convention.
