Who do I belong to!?!?
Now, like in a recent post from Derek Conely, I too am confused. since my Father's side is from Germany, I get my Scottish side from my Mother,Who was a Cook. Now, going by what Rocky has on his site under the Macdonald tartan list, I assumed Cook was a sept of the Macdonald Clan. But surfing around most specificaly on Scotclans.com, I have now seen the Cook name associated with the Stewart Clan. My Mothers Mother was a Thompson which at Scotclans.com is a sept of MacTavish or MacThomas. Mind you I have not done any in depth research much past what I have listed here. Perhaps a wise X-marker could shed some light?

First there were clans. Then there were surnames. Then the clans were supplanted by a strong central government. Then there were clan tartans.
If you want to know which clan (if any) you ancestors were associated with, there is no substitute for genealogical research, either the paper trail or, if you are lucky, DNA testing.

Dna?
Never heard of "Tree Chasing" being done that way. I might have to try that. All my mothers side are gone now with not much family history recorded.

That might be problematic re: DNA testing. Surnames are usually researched through patrilineal, Y chromosome DNA testing. See the FAQ at www.familytreedna.com

I wanted to honor both my Scots Irish side (minimal) AND my German Heritage at the same time. Since I thought Lederhosen with a kilt would be a bit 'much' , I designed the German Heritage and German American tartans...
German American:

German Heritage:

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY THE KILT FROM ME if you have another kiltmaker (I'm not posting this to 'advertise'). Your kiltmaker can order the material as stock tartans from Marton Mills.

.
Your lineage sounds much like mine. I researched your tartan list and saw Cook listed under MacDonald. Perhaps Ledersosen in a tartan!
or perhaps not...

Todd.. that's not shameless self promotion. You're not 'selling' anything in the article and you put a lot of work into it and SHOULD be proud of the article.

maybe have some of the "woven image" kind of tartans (with rampant lion and the thistle woven into the design) with a Beer Stein image... THAT would be neat. HAHAHAHA
