When the snow blows...
So I'm just about ready to head out for our Santa Claus parade and not only is it sub-zero temperatures out there, but there is a full-blown blizzard a blow'en out there. We have 2 or 3 pipe bands participating most years so I'm hoping they find some method of layering under their kilts. What's the protocol for these situations? I sure wouldn't want to be those guys and gals. More than rosie cheeks out there today!

I just wear something under the kilt when it's like that I've been fine. Some have suggested bike shorts, and of course Ron has a heater.

When I'm marching in really cold temperatures, I wear biking shorts. Our winter uniform is a military sweater, which keeps us warm, but sometimes we'll wear our Inverness capes too.

Heck, I just throw on my London Fog trench coat, and I'm fine. I live in the Rockies, and we get some pretty hefty storms here, too. A nice wool kilt, my trench, and everything stays nice and toasty.

Layering is the thing - shorts, kilt liner over long tunic, wool kilt, jersey or jacket, Gortex lined cape, cloak or coat, scarf, hat, gloves - plus thick hose with good boots.
A Gortex kilt liner is a good idea for times when the kilt is uncovered.
I make my scarves double thickness with the middle section left open, so they can be pulled up as a hood if the weather gets really bad. Keeping the cold air off head and neck is essential.

If you search for "cold weather" or "winter" and "posts by: Riverkilt" something could up - it's the answer Ron coined for "Aren't you cold?"
I must be one of the odd men out - I can see the sense in wearing something under the kilt in these temperatures, but so far my kilts have been warm enough by themselves (TMI, yes?). The couple of times I've added another layer I was too warm.

Under my wool kilt or even a SWK Standard, on really cold days I'll wear REI mid-weight boxers or SmartWool boxers. I went regimental once and am still healing from freezer burn. A hat really helps, though.

Make sure your hose are wool, boxers or shorts help. I wore my 22 oz WPG Seaforth Highlanders kilt to church yesterday. It was a balmy 15º F with a brisk breeze, but I was toasty warm except for my kneecaps.
