Start of a DIY project (check back in a year or two for further installments)

We have a beautiful twin trunked plum tree in our backyard. One trunk hung low over our small pond. Well late one night this week that trunk fell over.

(Oh well less artistic and Japanese but now the water lilies will get more sun next summer)

Anyway, when you get into making walking sticks and staffs you look at pruning projects with a different viewpoint

The shorter branch with the thick curve has great potential. I'm not so sure about the other two.

Off they go into my garage/workshop to wait until next year (or the year after)

Some projects take longer than others!

    Cheers

Definitely a lot of potential there.

Sounds great! I'm guessing that plum wood is a bit like cherry and almond wood: light weight but quite strong.

I've been planning to do the same this season when I prune my trees.

    Good luck.

They all look like you will be able to do something with them, while the shorter branch does have great potential to my eye so do the other two, here is an interesting walking stick I saw up at the Fergus games this year, I think it goes to show that just about anything goes.

McMurdo's post looks a lot like the "rheumatic sticks" of my boyhood. These were twisted sticks, carried by elderly (and usually bent) older men. They had the unique property that if dropped, one end was always somewhat raised off the ground. The owner then only had to step on the raised end, and it would raise the other end enough to enable it to be grabbed with bending too far over. (I didn't appreciate the why of that for about 65 years, but now I do!)

Panache, I am sure you know this, but do seal the ends, it will keep the wood from splitting as it drys and ages.

Look forward to seeing you reveal the "inner walking stick" of each branch.

Looks like you'll be having some great fun, Jamie. Sorry about the pond, though!
