Why do YOU wear a kilt?
For me personally, The first time I wore a kilt was as a child for halloween. I was rowdy Rody Piper, The wrestler. Years later, I worked summers at a Renaissance faire. One of my friends had been wearing a kilt for a while and suggested that I try it because of the free air conditioning. I've been wearing kilts for seven years now nearly all summer and as much as possible in the other months when it's not too cold. I have a hard time wearing pants anymore because the weight always pulling them down and the restricted mobility drives me nuts. And that's another thing! Jeans are like a cheap hotel...no ballroom. So please, tell me why you wear a kilt and how it came to be.

Every three or so months I wear the kilt when out and about, and try to get some pictures to check if I am doing it correctly. It's not at all an every day thing for me; though I enjoy wearing a kilt. It took me about a year to put together a good outfit, and learn all the things not to wear. There were several problems, and I'm still not completely sure.
Guess a friend had suggested that I try wearing a kilt, so I started down that path. It's not really a good reason to start wearing kilts.
There have ben several times when I considered not continueing to wear the kilt, so I have thought about it a lot lately... I guess being a part of XMTS draws me back in. I do still plan to have a traditional kilt made in the tartan that is important to me. Perhaps wearing my tartan will change things a little.

They are comfortable, almost all of the types can be outfitted to be good looking, and ladies find them to be interesting and attractive

I was at the St. Patty's Day parade in Vancouver four years ago and saw the Utilikilts booth but I couldn't afford one so no kilt for me. The next year March was a three cheque month and I managed to pick up an OD Original from those crazy UK guys. And now I've got four more kilts (non UK's) and no plans on stopping anytime soon!
Why do I wear a kilt? I wear them because they are fun! They are attention getters! They are conversation pieces! They are COMFORTABLE! They are all these things and more. Mainly, I think they are sharp. Dressed up they look WAY better than suits or tuxes, while casual they maintain their 'sharpness'.
I don't have a drop of Scottish blood in me as I'm an English/Welsh kind of guy. I like the heritage of the kilt and wear it proudly even though none of my ancesters did, and hope that my wearing of the kilt makes people happy whereever I go and whatever I'm doing!

Why? Because I want to. For the (physical) freedom they provide, as well as their expression of my Freedom of mind. Not to be different, but because I am naturally drawn to them (have just always liked them) and I have enough recognition of my free will to allow myself to wear them (and whatever else I think I might like to wear), where others would not solely because it would be different. Because I like my state of mind when I put one on. Because I guess I just think they suit my personality. Besides, it's fun!

I wear them because for me it inspires a sense of confidence. It puts a spring in my step so to speak. I wear it to honor my ancestors and to honor a friend no longer with us. I wear a kilt because I can and it challenges peoples preconceptions and idea's.

It started off as part of my learning about my Scottish lineage. Then, after I'd done it a couple of times, it was because it was fun and a little off-the-wall. Now it's all about Scots pride as well as comfort and just wearing what I want to wear. I'm a 45-year-old grouchy-old-man-in-training and I've hit the point in my life where I don't have time to worry about some uneducated boob in the produce section of the store not liking it that I'm wearing a dress. And a loud, ugly dress, to boot.
Oh -- and has anyone mentioned that ladies find them to be interesting and attractive?

First time I wore a kilt was about 5 years ago. It was a rental kilt at a renaissance fair. I liked it. I thought because I wasn't scottish or irish I would never wear one. Then I went to dragon con and saw Utilikilts every wear! So then I looked at those. However I didn;t want to start with a solid color kilt. So I bought a Black watch sport kilt because it was cheap and it was tartan. Now I have 2 sport kilts and a black utilikilt. I love them. As everyone else has said the comfort the mobility. I also like the fact I am different. I don't and peoples reactions are usually great or funny. I get very few reactions that make me angry.
