Wondering which style of pleating to get
I've pretty much decided that I'll be getting another kilt this summer, and it will be in Ferguson Ancient. I currently have a Modern one pleated to the sett, and while I do like that pleating, was thinking about getting the ancient to the stripe. But which one?!

efer posted some pics of his Modern to the white stripe, posted here.
Barb posted a pic of a weathered version to the red stripe, posted here.
Pleating to the white stripe looks very sharp, but I wonder if it might be too striking and busy. On the other hand, the red might be too subtle and lead to a quasi-lawnchair effect. Of course, that'll probably be less concern on the ancient than what I'm seeing on the weathered.
I was wondering if anyone out here had any thoughts on what this particular tartan would look good in? Or even better, does anyone happen to have a Ferguson Ancient pleated to either stripe? I'm sure that's a bit too much to ask, but worth a shot

hmmm
That would make a nice double-box!

I forgot to note in that past that I'm currently leaning towards the red
Dan, I get box pleats... what are double-boxes, though?

My best advice is listen to your kiltmaker - they can show you which options work for a given sett. I know I'm always thinking up terrific pleating ideas that defy the laws of physics.

I like the whte stripe, but I would not argue against the red.

You might want to look at pleating with the white right next to the fold. Depending on sett size should give you one red strip as well.

Thanks, Brian. I like the concept there... but would it make my rump look too much like a candy cane with the red and white stripes alternating?

You may want to ask you kiltmaker pleat up the cloth both ways so you can see an actual comparison. I just went through a "sett/stripe" decision and the pics helped me a lot.
The pics on this thread (link below) were sent to me by Stewart Rendall who is currently making a tank for me in MacArthur Ancient:

Only if the stripes are on the diagonal.
