What to wear where?
Okay - I'm new here, and I will admit that I have not yet purchased a kilt.
There are obviously some serious "do's and don'ts" about how to wear a kilt, but my question is, with a casual kilt, what is appropriate shirt & shoes? I don't seem to see much talk about every-day dress with a kilt. I've seen pictures of pretty much everything from flip-flops to work boots.

Your best bet is to first check out 1 Kilt 10 Looks under "General Kilt Talk" and then get back to all of us if you have any unanswered questions!

Welcome here,
You will find lots of answers and lots of discussion on the rights and wrongs, and sometimes very vocal for and against.
The most important thing to remember that you are in charge of what you wear , be
confident in it and you will be able to carry it off.
Some posters here only wear a kilt on special ocasions, some like me, have a range of traditional and contemporary style kilts, and wear them at least several times a week, just as I might wear jeans, or smart trousers or even a suit. I co ordinate what goes with what in the same way I decide what I might wear with trousers!

When you wear, whatever you wear, remember you are leaving a lasting impression on people.
As far as what to wear when, nice dress shirt, Polo, rugby, or dress T, colors that compliment your tartan. Shoes, well, there are many options, brogues, ghillie brogus, hiking boots. wear colored hose that work with your shirt or jacket, which will mean that they also work with your kilt. Please not white!
Wear whatever you would wear to make a good impression!
You'll get tons of good advice!
Welcome to what will soon become your home away from home

There are a few places to look for what to wear and when. There are the Style threads
Formal
Dressy
Casual
Also there is the recent 10 looks 1 kilt thread
Ten Looks 1 Kilt
These should give you an idea of what to wear when. Another idea is to post photos of you in an outfit and ask what others think about it.

I'll second McMurdo. I shall also add that the kilt is a very versatile garment. Check out those threads and then add your touch to them. Just realize that some things you choose to wear with the kilt may not be traditional Highland attire and some kilts you choose to wear may not be traditional (there are more than just traditional tartan kilts out there). On that note also check out the Contemporary forum.
There is a wealth of knowledge here at X Marks, explore, ask questions, and above all have fun in your kilted endeavors!

Welcome aboard.
Where on the Planet are you?
Much depends on the occasion and weather at the time....hence we become kilt addicts as we acquire kilts in different weights and fabrics and accessories to cope with different weather and different social occasions or occupational conditions.
You'll find the answers for most any situation here for sure.
