    Kilt belt and Buckle

Being a "Gentleman of Substance", I often find it very hard to locate belts that fit, let alone one large enough to qualify as a kilt belt... So I thought I would put one together. I bought a 3" wide strip of leather from Tandy Leather, shaped, dyed and sealed it, then added a buckle I put together in my shop. I could have saved a few hours labour with an inexpensive re-enactment style buckle, but where's the fun in that? There's not much choice in 3 1/2" wide buckles either!

The buckle is made from sheet brass stock I had lying around, and decorated with strips of 1/2" stainless steel that is riveted on using hollow steel rivets. The decorative pattern of Celtic knot concho and rivets repeats 4 times around the belt, appearing at approx. 3 o'clock, 5, 7 and 9 o'clock positions when the belt is worn. (The tartan I have used to photograph the belt is my daughter's dancing kilt, so pictures of me wearing the kilt belt will have to wait at least another week until my kilt is finished...)

Very nicely done, and truly a belt that you can be proud of!

...but now, you need to make a brass cantled sporran to go with it.

The workmanship looks like you've done things like this before! Very nice!

The rivets in the stainless steel saltire resemble the stars in the conferderate flag. I'm guessing some of the Southern States members on XMTS will appreciate this too.

Being Canadian, I naturally did not think about the "Southern Cross" when I was designing the buckle. I was going for symmetry and an industrial look, hence the steel rivets.

My wife and I have made custom jewelry in the recent past- she tends to wire wrapping and chain maille, and I do some brazing and delicate soldering in silver and brass. Lately I have been putting together some of the tools she needs to try different projects, notably a 20 ton bench-top press for pressing designs into silver and copper sheet metal.

The sporran will be another thread... I didn't go with a brass cantle, but I should have some pictures up later tonight!
