    I was handed shorts!

On Friday night I went to visit a friend who I haven't seen in over a year. Decided to wear a casual kilt with boots and a t-shirt. We were just going to relax for a while and then go get something quick to eat at a local bar. He complimented me on my kilt and even went so far as to state that he respects me for being different and blaze new trails without worrying about what others think. He admires that. (keep that in mind)

So it was time to get going to eat and he handed me some shorts. "Here you can borrow my shorts." I asked why. He said, "you certainly cannot go to my local bar wearing a kilt. What will people think of me walking in with you like that? You are not going to be comfortable going into my bar wearing that! People will think you are crazy. I don't want to ruin my reputation by being seen with you in a kilt."

So I put my hand on my belt buckle and almost entertained the thought of putting on shorts until I got mad at myself for even remotely considering the thought of changing. Then I said "no, this is who I am and this is how I am dressed. I am not wearing shorts. Go eat by yourself." I left and went home.

So much for being admired for being different. No worries - I realize he wasn't a friend and is recatagorized to acquaintence.

Anyone interested in having a kilt night at a small local bar here in New Jersey? I might be able to make sure he is there and we can ALL be his "friend" or anyone can just show up and ask them if he is around because you are friends with him. hahhaa

Yes -- acquaintance. If he's ashamed to be seen with you, he's no friend.

    Fear

It's fear, kilt wearing is probably akin to skirt wearing and being associated with someone "like that" would ultimately reflect badly on his standing among his peers. In this case, fear trumps friendship. Fear is a very powerful motivator. You are probably better off hanging out with people who are not so fearful of life, the "fearful" ones may reflect badly on your standing with your peers!

You may have heard that if you want to know who "you are", look at your friends. We tend to keep company with people who share our own values and these are reflected back toward us. Culling this fearful person from your herd is this principle in action.

There is a man on this planet who worries what people in a BAR will think of him???

    Wow,
I can't imagine being asked to change into shorts. You did the right thing by leaving. I agree with Riverkilt, no real man on this planet cares what people in bars think of him.

Humph. Fellow like that, request a nun to drop her habit just to visit a nudist colony so she fits in...

Truth be told, he was likely scared you would get more play than he.
